I person I had knew and messaged a number of times deleted their account sometime ago. It seems like like Twitter, when someone deletes their account, still keeps showing you there messages in DMs, but then eventually removes those messages, and then removes the accountable from my DM list all together. Though this system is not always consistent, as some accounts I've messaged which got banned disappeared from my DM lists for a while before reappearing with no explanation.
