Why does my survival game feel repetitive, and what would make it more exciting to play?
My game is a top-down survival game where the player travels through separate locations, searches for loot and resources, survives dangerous encounters, and prepares for future areas and boss fights. My main goal with this game is to keep the player under constant tension — I want exploration to feel exciting, stressful, and sometimes even unsettling. Right now, though, the levels/locations feel too repetitive and empty. Players usually avoid enemies whenever possible because enemies are visible on the minimap, then they loot the area and move on. So I wanted to ask: What would make a game like this genuinely exciting and immersive for you? What kinds of moments, situations, or mechanics would make exploration memorable and tense instead of repetitive? At the moment the game has: different weapons healing items infection system flashlight minimap that can reveal enemies enemy AI states (patrolling, searching, alerted/aggro, and hunting behavior based on a detection meter)
