What the gym has done to me

Before 2020, my friend Maina, and I decided to start working out somewhere along Thika Road. What started as a joke slowly became serious. Every morning, five days a week, we pushed each other to wake up ridiculously early and show up. We had an amazing instructor, Lewi, who made the journey enjoyable and pushed us hard.
After a few months, we started feeling different. Looking different too. More energy, more confidence, better mental health ...everything slowly improved. Then my friend left, and suddenly I was doing it alone. And if you’ve ever had a consistent workout partner, you know how hard it is to replace that kind of accountability.
I later switched gyms to Easy Gym pale TRM (for those who know it 😄). But then COVID happened… and honestly, I never really went back.
Now here’s the thing: some of us don’t gain weight when life gets hard , we lose muscle, become smaller, and slowly stop recognizing ourselves. Add heavy drinking, poor eating habits, stress, and life happening… and with time, all the gains disappeared.
Recently, I started working out again, and I had forgotten how good it feels afterward. That post-workout feeling is unmatched. The mental clarity, the energy, better appetite, improved confidence, better sleep, even libido 😅… everything slowly starts improving. And the best part? You begin noticing small wins again.
My body isn’t where I want it to be yet, but I believe it will get there someday.
This post is simply to encourage someone: start. Hit the gym, go for a run, walk, stretch , whatever works for you. Don’t wait for motivation. Start where you are, with what you have. Your future self will thank you.
Fitness is not just about looking good. Sometimes, it’s about surviving life a little better.
