Sapphire Reserve + The Edit: Disappointing Experience After Large Price Drop

Thanks to those who provided helpful tips on how to avoid large hotel price drops by booking refundable hotels using Chase Travel and still qualify for the Edit credit. (I had to delete my original post because a bot thought it was an AI post.) I’m still wary of booking nonrefundable hotels here, but I learned a lot! 😊

Sapphire Reserve + The Edit: Disappointing Experience After Large Price Drop

I have both the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Reserve Business cards, so I specifically booked a luxury Boston hotel through The Edit by Chase Travel in order to use the premium hotel benefits tied to the reservation.

To qualify for the benefits, I booked a nonrefundable rate through Chase Travel.

A few weeks later, I noticed that the exact same room and stay had dropped in price by nearly $700.

Given the size of the difference and the premium positioning of The Edit for Sapphire Reserve customers, I contacted Chase Travel expecting at least some type of reasonable review or adjustment. Instead, I learned that Chase now has a fairly narrow and restrictive price match policy that effectively did not apply in my situation.

I escalated the matter to the Chase executive office and found that process disappointing as well. Ultimately, the only meaningful assistance came from an empathetic Chase Travel supervisor who provided a courtesy points credit, which I appreciated.

What left the worst impression was the structure of the incentive itself. The Edit benefits effectively encouraged me to book a nonrefundable rate through Chase’s ecosystem. Had I booked a refundable rate elsewhere, I simply could have cancelled and rebooked after the price drop.

Instead, using Chase’s premium travel platform left me locked into a dramatically higher rate with very little flexibility or meaningful protection when the market price changed substantially.

For me, the issue is not only the money. It is that the overall experience fell well short of what Chase markets to Sapphire Reserve customers as a premium travel experience.

Curious whether other Sapphire Reserve cardholders have encountered similar situations with The Edit or Chase Travel pricing after booking luxury hotel stays.
