How exactly do people get crazy research

I emailed around 250 professors and most of them said they don't have space or or that if I joined their lab I would basically not do that much. For computational research, since I am doing like python/mathplotlib data analysis .Not sure if it just a skill issue from me and I should bump up the emails to like 500.

Free Math

Hi everyone! We are starting a free math community with the goal of helping students who want to improve their math skills but may not have access to tutoring. What we offer: Completely FREE lessons / Online via Zoom /Topics from arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry. We already had our first couple of lessons already.

In addition, a college professor also is willing to teach Cambridge A-level math / IGCSE additional math and Edexcel. EDIT: Disregard the College Professor I didn't realize he was just trying to sell the students tutoring services. However I do teach for free and my other founder.

And I teach from pre-algebra to Calculus 1.

Comment down before and I'll send you the discord invite.

Credentials:

My founder and I have already completed Calculus. I have finished Linear Algebra and Calculus 3. I also do competition math in my free time like AMC 12 and AIME. And my other tutor is a college professor.

EDIT: I didn't realize this professor whole goal was to get students through this discord and then make them pay money. Please disregard the portion about the professor however we do teach for free.

CC credit-UCB

Hi I was wondering I could repeat classes that I took in CC. My CC classes were pretty easy and I heard that Berkley math Classes are a bit of a shock and wanted to redo the classes at Berkeley Is this possible?? I already got A's in those CC classes. I took Calc 3 and Diff eqs and Linear algebra 2 years ago as a high schooler and forgot a lot of stuff.

The Bucket List

Problem Description:

Farmer John has N cows (1≤N≤100), conveniently numbered 1…N. The ith cow needs to be milked from time si to time ti, and requires bi buckets to be used during the milking process. Several cows might end up being milked at the same time; if so, they cannot use the same buckets. That is, a bucket assigned to cow i's milking cannot be used for any other cow's milking between time si and time ti. The bucket can be used for other cows outside this window of time, of course. To simplify his job, FJ has made sure that at any given moment in time, there is at most one cow whose milking is starting or ending (that is, the si's and ti's are all distinct).

FJ has a storage room containing buckets that are sequentially numbered with labels 1, 2, 3, and so on. In his current milking strategy, whenever some cow (say, cow i) starts milking (at time si), FJ runs to the storage room and collects the bi buckets with the smallest available labels and allocates these for milking cow i.

Please determine how many total buckets FJ would need to keep in his storage room in order to milk all the cows successfully.

INPUT FORMAT (file blist.in):

The first line of input contains N. The next N lines each describe one cow, containing the numbers si, ti, and bi, separated by spaces. Both si and ti are integers in the range 1…1000, and bi is an integer in the range 1…10.

OUTPUT FORMAT (file blist.out):

Output a single integer telling how many total buckets FJ needs.

SAMPLE INPUT:

3
4 10 1
8 13 3
2 6 2

SAMPLE OUTPUT:

4

In this example, FJ needs 4 buckets: He uses buckets 1 and 2 for milking cow 3 (starting at time 2). He uses bucket 3 for milking cow 1 (starting at time 4). When cow 2 arrives at time 8, buckets 1 and 2 are now available, but not bucket 3, so he uses buckets 1, 2, and 4.

This is what I tried to program: I was wondering why I was running into Command exited with non-zero status 124. Everything complied correctly I believe. And it shouldn't have timed out.

EDIT:

Updated code

N = int(input())
num_used = 0
bucket = 0
cows = []
t = 0
num_0 = 0
for i in range(N):
    s , t_1, b = map(int,input().split())
    cow = [s,t_1,b]
    cows.append(cow)

sorted_cows = sorted(cows, key=lambda x: x[1])

while num_0 < N:
    for i in range(len(sorted_cows)):
        if sorted_cows[i][0] == t:
            if sorted_cows[i][2] >= bucket:
                num_used = num_used + sorted_cows[i][2] - bucket
                bucket = 0
            elif sorted_cows[i][2] < bucket:
                bucket = bucket - sorted_cows[i][2]
        if sorted_cows[i][1] < t:
            bucket = bucket + sorted_cows[i][2]
            for j in range(3):
                sorted_cows[i][j] = 0
                num_0 = num_0 + 1
    t = t + 1
print(num_used)

Problem relating to Cows

Problem Description:

Fortunately, there is only one long path running across the farm, and Farmer John knows that Bessie has to be at some location on this path. If we think of the path as a number line, then Farmer John is currently at position x and Bessie is currently at position y (unknown to Farmer John). If Farmer John only knew where Bessie was located, he could walk directly to her, traveling a distance of |x−y|. Unfortunately, it is dark outside and Farmer John can't see anything. The only way he can find Bessie is to walk back and forth until he eventually reaches her position.

Trying to figure out the best strategy for walking back and forth in his search, Farmer John consults the computer science research literature and is somewhat amused to find that this exact problem has not only been studied by computer scientists in the past, but that it is actually called the "Lost Cow Problem" (this is actually true!).

The recommended solution for Farmer John to find Bessie is to move to position x+1, then reverse direction and move to position x−2, then to position x+4, and so on, in a "zig zag" pattern, each step moving twice as far from his initial starting position as before. As he has read during his study of algorithms for solving the lost cow problem, this approach guarantees that he will at worst travel 9 times the direct distance |x−y| between himself and Bessie before he finds her (this is also true, and the factor of 9 is actually the smallest such worst case guarantee any strategy can achieve).

Farmer John is curious to verify this result. Given x and y, please compute the total distance he will travel according to the zig-zag search strategy above until he finds Bessie.

INPUT FORMAT (file lostcow.in):

The single line of input contains two distinct space-separated integers x and y. Both are in the range 0…1,000.

OUTPUT FORMAT (file lostcow.out):

Print one line of output, containing the distance Farmer John will travel to reach Bessie.

SAMPLE INPUT:

3 6

SAMPLE OUTPUT:

9

I tried solving this problem and it worked on the inputs that I tried like 1 5 . Which gave me 10 which I believe is correct here is my code : However this code did not pass all of the test cases could I have a hint ?

x,y = map(int,input().split())
import sys
op_count = 0
steps = 0
while(x!=y):
    op = (-2)**op_count
    target = 3+op
    for i in range(abs(target-x)):
        if op < 0:
            x = x-1
            steps+=1
            if x == y:
                print(steps)
                sys.exit()
        elif op >= 1:
            x = x+1
            steps+=1
            if x == y:
                print(steps)
                sys.exit()
    op_count = op_count+1

Row Space and Column Space

What is the geometric intuition of Row Space and Column Space I don't completely understand why they span different vector spaces. I thought if you had a list of vectors the column space and row space would be the same. As it is just different linear combinations that would lead to the same answer but I think that is incorrect. If they are different doesn't that mean we get different vector spaces from the same vectors?

Linear Algebra. Null Space

Hi, I had question on the Null Space

In a 2x5 matrix how come the Null space spans R^5. I don't get this as our vectors themselves are only in R^2, so how can we reach R^5.

Questions regarding courses

Hi I was taking linear algebra and Calc 3 in my community college but I noticed that my classes were very computational and not very theory heavy. I was wondering if I would struggle a lot in a class called Introduction to Formal Mathematics which I am going to take at a dual enrolled university. The class covers: Logic of mathematical proof, set theory, relations, functions. Examples and applications from set cardinality, algebra, and analysis. But has pre reqs of Calc 2 and Linear Algebra which I know I didn't have the greatest theoretical grasp on. Thank you so much!
