Questions about Alan from a clueless American
There are a couple things Alan says in his books / podcast that I don't understand, hopefully some people can enlighten me.
- At one point Alan says that The National Trust is the only worthwhile charity. This struck me as a little odd because Alan is obviously pretty conservative so you'd think he'd largely be against that sort of thing. Is this only because Alan is a big fan of rambling so as a result he appreciates the work they do?
- He shits on Radio 4 and ITV a lot - what is the reputation of these outlets? It looks like Radio 4 is a more liberal leaning outlet? But he also just seems to have a problem with the sort of content they put out in general that isn't related to political news or anything.
- The plot point in FTOH season 3 where he comes across that country manor and just breaks into it and starts walking around seemed really odd to me. So unusual I thought maybe there was some sort of larger thing I was missing? He's mentioned in the past that people who have big English heritage estates open them up to the public for a month out of the year as a tax break so I wasn't clear if this was related? Like did he misunderstand that it wasn't open to the public? I know he broke into that guy's garage in season 1 of FTOH but in my mind that was a detached garage vs this family's entire home.
- This is a more general question but of the celebrities/political figures Alan mentions how many of them have personalities that are complete fabrications for comedic effect compared to their real life counter-parts (Sue Cook, Delia Smith and Ainsley Harriott maybe?) and how many of them are exaggerations of the public perception these people already have? It seems like both Noel Edmonds and Eamonn Holmes are pretty unpopular presenters that fit that bill. Grant Shapps as well (he always nails it)?
