It’s my two year anniversary of stopping vaping today

17th August 2024 I had a horrible chest infection in both lungs. Woke me up a bit and I quit vaping (after something close to 15 years) before which I was easily on 20 bensons a day for the better part of a decade or two.

I remember being proud of myself switching from smoking to vaping in that it was 95% safer. However, the convenience and comfort factor meant I was easily vaping more than 20 times more than I was ever smoking which probably wiped out any benefit.

Am still on 2mg niquitin mints which I’m using like sweets and really should do something about but that will come in good time.

If you’re thinking about it, just go for it. If I can, anyone can.

iPhone replacement process

Friend dropped his iPhone XS about 4 days ago. Ended up with a very temperamental screen which was initially displaying half of it, then green flashes and then the screen died.

So he decided it was time to upgrade. He bought a 16 plus from giffgaff. Which is a nice upgrade for him.

However the issues he’s had trying to transfer his phone over are mind blowing.

Unboxed the phone and charged it. Turned it on and started setup. Got to the setup iCloud step and either he has to receive a text or a security code in his old iPhone. Can’t do either of them. So we moved his SIM into the new phone. Nope, no signal or indication that we could phone it or send it a text. We tried both.

We then tried his SIM in an older iPhone 4 he had by using the cradle from a new giffgaff SIM he found. Nope couldn’t recognise it.

So we back away from iCloud (which we will need for restore purposes soon) and get to the Home Screen. Now it’s saying that the SIM is invalid.

We then try the new giffgaff SIM he found and it says No Signal

So we setup his email on the phone so we can get a login code for giffgaff, manage to login and use the new giffgaff SIM he found to transfer his number to.

After about an hour. Hurrah! Signal.

Ok. Now we’re looking at backups of his XS and transferring his lot onto his new phone.

I ask him to login to iCloud on his laptop (PC) as we can now get texts to authentify. We wanted to look at his storage to see if there was a backup on it.

We tried twice and iCloud have locked his account. He must change his password and they’ll tell him by email in 24 hours how long it will be before they can unlock it.

I looked at mine. It says backups (n devices) but not which ones so I hope there’s a backup of his XS.

So this is where we are.

One question. Is it possible to receive an SMS while setting up an iPhone at the point where you log into iCloud?

TLDR; countless rigmaroles.
