FAQs regarding IIM Mumbai coming for a student
If any admin is reading this: I genuinely like the college, I think it’s a good institute, and I mean no harm to its reputation. My interests aligned with the college when I joined, and this is just meant to give aspirants a more realistic picture before making a decision.
Now that that’s out of the way:
IIM Mumbai is obviously a top B-school on paper, but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Here’s a clearer picture from someone actually studying here.
Hostel & Administration
The campus is pretty small. There are basically no proper sports facilities, and the gym has limited memberships. Boys usually get double-sharing rooms with common washrooms, which comes with the usual hygiene/sanitary concerns, though you eventually adjust.
The mess was a major issue for a while, although they are planning to bring in a new vendor. Apart from that, there honestly isn’t much to do on campus itself.
The administration is also quite slow and bureaucratic at times. A lot of decisions and rules can feel random or overly controlling.
Academics
For both Core and OSCM, academics used to be relatively chill compared to other B-schools, but recently they’ve been adding random courses, surprise tests, and unnecessary workload just for the sake of it.
Core is still heavily supply-chain focused.
OSCM is basically a glorified M.Tech degree.
SM is comparatively chill.
Campus Life
The first few months are hectic because everything revolves around SIPs. Once you secure one, life becomes much more relaxed.
Campus life itself is average because there isn’t much happening inside campus, but you’re in Mumbai, so you can still have a great social life outside.
Placements
This is the section most people care about.
Placements are common across specializations, and around 90% of companies do not care about your specialization unless you’re in SM, where specific companies come for that niche.
Almost all OSCM students get supply chain roles and SIPs. A large portion of Core students also end up in supply chain-related roles because most top recruiters and high packages here are tied to supply chain.
The placement team genuinely works hard, but there is still a serious lack of role diversity.
If you are a non-engineer targeting fields like marketing, finance, consulting, HR, etc., you may have a very difficult time, especially during SIPs. HR roles are almost non-existent.
For finance roles, you realistically need something like CFA/CA or relevant work experience just to be competitive, and even then nothing is guaranteed. Same situation for tech/product roles.
I personally know extremely smart people who struggled for a long time during SIP season simply because the variety of roles was limited.
SM students generally have the easiest placement process because of the smaller batch size and dedicated recruiters.
My Honest Advice
If you are a non-engineer, please think carefully before choosing Core, especially if you are expecting strong role diversity outside supply chain.
Personally, I would even consider lower-ranked institutes if they offer better role diversity aligned with your goals.
Also, for some reason, they’ve started enrolling non-engineers into OSCM. Unless you are genuinely interested in supply chain/operations and comfortable with heavy quantitative coursework, DO NOT TOUCH IT WITH A 10-FOOT POLE. It is essentially an M.Tech-style program, and people from non-math backgrounds can genuinely struggle.
If you are specifically interested in sustainability, though, I would definitely recommend SM.
Overall, the college is genuinely very good if your priority is placements and you are an engineer, especially if you are open to supply chain and operations roles.
I’m not saying “take X college over this one.” That decision depends entirely on your career goals and background. This is just the reality I personally experienced here.
Edit : Idk about the results Atb to all for it and hope this helps you come to a decision
Edit 2 : Won’t be replying to people putting profile and asking if they should come for XYZ roles. Post is self explanatory
