l've been removing old insulation (mostly 2-5” throughout the attic), air sealing, and will add new insulation to R-60. I'm in a dry climate with heavy snowstorms in winter / spring.

Before I blow in cellulose, I wanted advice on addressing some gaps. I have no soffits but open eaves with a large overhang (bungalow style home). I have a ridge vent, intake vents lower down on the roof, and closed off gable vents. I have been researching the last couple weeks and I'm overwhelmed as most advice is for modern homes - would greatly appreciate pointers!

There are gaps in 3 places and I'd like to not use spray foam in these areas (if sealing) to prevent unwanted expansion & critters eating their way through.

  1. Under roof deck in eaves on one side of the home that I can only reasonably access inside. Not sure what to do here... I imagine I should keep the gaps for additional ventilation in an old home but what's the best way to keep air flow after adding significantly more insulation? Baffles or something else? Correct me if I'm wrong and if I should close off the gap. No signs of moisture here and there is at least a foot of overhang beyond this.

  2. Between 2 chimneys and gable walls. I imagine this was intentional for safety. People online suggest mesh, fireblock caulk, mortar, packing with insulation, or flashing. No evidence of moisture damage at these points but I would like to seal to prevent critters & yellow jackets from coming in. Any suggestions on best method?

3.

  1. At bottom of gable walls. There is evidence of moisture buildup here & the wood is dry.. these gaps were blocked by old insulation. I imagine I should seal to prevent the same issue. I'm thinking lime mortar - thoughts? After sealing, can I put insulation against the plaster & lath or should I keep a gap for breathability?

Also, in tight spaces with no ventilation, should I use baffles purely to keep insulation from touching the roof deck?

Thank you SO much in advance!
