I remember growing up there was a game that was top down, and you could play co-op with someone else (in my case my dad). You could play as one of 3 or 4 characters (not Gauntlet). Fantasy setting. Towards the end you'd have to fight the people you didn't pick and I remember it was a somewhat tragic ending for a teenager. Its an obscure game I haven't heard of since, and it just popped in my head.
