Very beginner students

How do you go about tutoring students with barely any English comprehension skills? Sometimes I get students, especially kids, who can hardly understand “how are you?” or “what is your name?”. At that point, I’m completely at a loss as to how to engage them in a conversation.

Giving feedback

Sometimes I feel like I am just rambling at the student during the feedback portion of the lesson. This happens particularly during 40 minute discussion focused lessons, where they want the last ten minutes to be focused on feedback. I tend to make the correction and try to explain it then ask if it makes sense. 90% of the time they say “yes” and I move onto the next question. However it doesn’t feel very interactive and I think this technique is the source of some of my lower ratings.

With kids, I ask them to give me examples of using new vocabulary and play some grammar games to check understanding. But I don’t want to patronise the adults by doing that. How do you make the feedback section interesting and interactive, particularly for adults?

Unfair strike

A few days ago, I had a student drop out of a 40 min lesson but, as always, I joined the lesson on time and waited for Ringle to assign me a new student. They didn’t so I left after 25 minutes. At the end of the lesson I was given a strike for a no show??? I was literally there the whole time and have never no-showed a lesson. I submitted an appeal with evidence I was there so it should get overturned. However since that incident I have had no bookings, which I suspect is because I lost a star and gained a strike. Additionally this happened before the weekend and it takes several business days for appeals to be considered. There are also delays because of a Korean holiday, I believe. I’m very annoyed by this because I am losing out on work for potentially a week because of an error on their side. Obviously this would never happen but I feel entitled to compensation 😭 has this ever happened to anyone else?
