I'm following a pattern for a moss stitch blanket pattern which advises the following:

Foundation chain

Then for following rows repeat: single crochet, chain 1 + skip stitch

I'm single crocheting into the chain spaces in the rows below

I've had to redo this blanket a few times because I don't understand why one side of my moss stitch has split loops! I love the moss stitch because of those notches that sit down into the colour underneath, but I don't like the split loops at all...

I think it might be my tension but I've redone this new one tighter and it looks the same
