Not Tipping = messing with Employee discount

So I work at a restaurant (won’t say the name) but our policy is that when we don’t work and want to eat there it’s 20% off but when we do work and eat there it’s 40% off. So it was me and a friend, and I work that day. I don’t mind tipping but today my friend was paying for everything and I didn’t have money on me. After I ate we got the bill and the server said that basically since I didn’t tip electronically if I can leave any tip so that our manager won’t mess with my employee discount. Like I said I don’t mind tipping but today I didn’t have it on me cause a friend was paying off me. But can they do that, can they mess with your discount over not tipping?
