How should I compare fanfic to original work?

Mainly I want to know about the "write a few books and then publish a book" advice. How should I translate that to fan fic writing, which is much shorter and most of the heavy lifting of world-building is already done for it.

Is it comparable because you can still learn your process doing fanfic work, or is none of it applicable? A lot of published books started as fanfics, which is the main reason I'm asking. 🤔

For context; I've written maybe 15+ short stories or fanfics, the longest was 25k words but that was for 25 chapters because I was 16. If I did 5k per chapter, it would've been about 125k. The current fanfic I'm working on is 2k minimum per chapter and I'm working up to 3k and then 4, 5. It's helpful for me personally to get used to writing good length chapters, since fantasy chapters are about 5-8k words and upwards of 30 chapters. My shortest fic ever was about 1.6k words because I never settle for less than 1.5k, even for one-shots.

All advice is appreciated!! ☺️

My mom and her husband got 2 Chihuahua puppies from an abusive home about 5 days ago, one short-hair and one long-hair. They're about 7-8 weeks old and the short-hair isn't eating. We're trying different foods but I'm getting really worried and wondering if there's anything we can do to get him to eat? His brother has boundless energy because he's eating properly but this one just isn't and he's tired and timid. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Mom had to force feed some peanut butter to the roof of his mouth and now he's eating. I don't know why that worked but he's going to be okay now. thank you for all your suggestions!
