Last night was our final official City Council meeting before the summer break. The CEIC Committee reviewed public feedback on short‑term rentals, and we’ll continue gathering input throughout the summer. We plan to hold a public meeting where we’ll determine whether to move forward, based on community feedback, available data, and information from neighboring cities and our own departments.
The CC addressed a lot of business during the meeting! This included finalizing updates to several ordinances to help make it easier for businesses to open in Malden.
However, the major topic of discussion was whether to amend our ordinance to allow the transfer of a cannabis license for 36 Charles St.
I spent a lot of time researching before the meeting, and more importantly, I kept an open mind as we worked to balance the goal of opening cannabis businesses in Malden with the need to follow proper procedures.
My primary concern was ensuring that everyone goes through the CLEC for proper vetting. I initially expected to vote against the amendment, but after the discussion, it became clear that amending the ordinance was the only way to allow the applicant to move forward to the CLEC. Based on that, I voted in favor.
I have long supported opening cannabis shops to help increase our revenue, and while I still have a few questions, the benefits outweighed my concerns. Those remaining questions will be addressed at the CLEC. They have a meeting tonight at 5 PM, and I will be attending.
We have been working hard behind the scenes to bring the best program yet for our 9th annual celebration. We hope to see you there! Friday, June 19th 11:am-3PM SALEMWOOD SCHOOL FIELDHOUSE!
TONIGHT!
I support the resolution concerning the state auditor. As for the proposal on establishing a public language access plan and policy, I agree with it in principle, but I believe we need a dedicated language access coordinator to effectively implement any citywide plan.
Our current language access coordinator, who was not consulted about this resolution, has been contacted and will attend the meeting to distribute the plan she has been developing over the past few years.
Last night, during our finance committee meeting, we met with both the Superintendent of Schools and the Director of the OSPCD. They each did a great job summarizing their budgets, and then the meeting opened up for questions.
During the Superintendent’s presentation, while he was discussing healthcare costs, I asked about the $1.6 million mistake in the school budget on the City side. Specifically, I asked whether there will be better communication between departments to ensure this kind of error never happens again- and if so, we would be able to catch it earlier.
Mr. Sippel was honest and open in explaining what happened. Unfortunately, our conversation was cut short by the chair and the administration. We were told that information about the error and how it is being addressed had already been sent to the finance chair. We later learned that this memo was only sent to the finance team, so I—and some of my colleagues—had not been informed. The chair then asked for it to be forwarded to us and I have had a chance to review and share here.
I want to thank Mr. Sippel for understanding the importance of transparency. I am sharing this information here because I believe strongly in making public information accessible. I always share what I can, and of course I do not share anything that we are legally restricted from discussing. But in truth, that represents a very small portion of what we handle. The government should be as open as possible, whenever possible.
🌊What a great morning to celebrate at The Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA) Annual Champions Breakfast!
This event celebrates watershed conservationists, community leaders, and volunteers who contribute to the health of the Mystic River and this year Katherine Clark was recognized for her support and funding that made the Malden River Project a reality.
💦Why is caring for the river important?
As a Board Member, I can tell you it’s important because:
• Environmental protection: Malden lies within the Mystic River watershed, meaning all its stormwater and waterways feed into the Mystic River system. MyRWA monitors water quality, tracks pollution sources, and pushes for cleanup efforts that directly improve Malden’s environment.
🌊Flood prevention and climate resilience: Malden faces increasing flood risk from heavy rainfall and aging infrastructure. MyRWA works on watershed‑wide resilience planning, habitat restoration, and green infrastructure projects that reduce flooding in communities like Malden.
• Public health and recreation: Cleaner water supports safer parks, paths, and waterways that Malden residents use, including the Malden River. MyRWA helps restore shorelines, remove trash, and create access points for walking, biking, paddling, and nature observation.
Most importantly, today focused on environmental justice!
The FACT is, Malden received this funding due to the inclusive efforts of the Malden River Works steering committee and the friends of the Malden River.
Together, we pushed for environmental justice and equity, not only for the use of this public resource, but in the actual building and development of the project.
Today was a proud day for all- it makes a difference when we work together!
Join us! We will have a food truck - tacos, and a porta potty if you are out and about a need a break 😬
EXCITING UPDATE on the Malden Riverworks Project this Thursday, April 30th - Malden Senior Center 5:30PM-7:00PM.
You may have driven by the DPW site and wondered what was going on- come hear the exciting news! The Malden River Works project brought together one of the most diverse community coalitions - including residents, environmental advocates, and government stakeholders to create Malden's first-ever public riverfront park!
One of the most important aspects of the project is the upgrade of the City's Department of Public Works (DPW) for environmental sustainability and climate change. As a Board Member of the Mystic River Watershed Association I know how important it is for city engineers to work on nature-based solutions to improve water quality. From infiltration trenches to saving our wetlands- it all addresses climate risks.
I can’t wait for this project to be completed (this summer) and to place our canoe and kayak in the water from a Malden access point!
I just wanted to apologize. I have no idea why there were multiple posts of my announcement. I think it has something to do with my new phone, but in any case that wasn’t on purpose!
