Survivor benefit question
I’m hoping this is irrelevant, but a current health scare has me feeling under-insured, so I’m trying to wrap my head around survivor benefits. My latest SSA document shows a survivor benefit of $1,789 for a minor child and spouse if caring for a minor child or child under 16. Spouse gets $2,386 at full retirement age (a ways off and probably not relevant, as she works and would continue to do so). Total family benefit max of $4,465.
I have two children ages 12 and 10 right now. I realize their benefits would go through HS graduation. Would each get the $1,789 monthly? My wife, who would likely continue working, would get nothing at this time, correct? We’re very close to adopting a younger foster child who we took in shortly after birth. How would that factor in?
