Connections für Studentenjob?

Heyy,

AITA for scheduling work on a friend’s birthday?

Hello everyone,

I’m (20) in a friend group of 5 girls all ranging 18-21 y/o. we all go to the same boarding school. 4 of us are in the middle of our finals and unfortunately A’s(turning 19) birthday is this sunday with one final exam happening next week.
We usually celebrate everyones birthday pretty lowkey- they get a group gift with photos and letters as well as either one bigger gift or personalized smaller gifts from everyone. To celebrate we usually just sit outside (if its nice) and have some cake and drinks, then we go to the birtday girls room, decorate it and chat a little longer. A thinks her last birthday was a complete bust- she got her present, we made crepes and then drank a little while chatting in her room. She’s been on my ass about it for the past year, though I have to admit I felt that it wasn’t very special either, i can’t really remember much about how it went down.

Now, i’ve been doing my best to get her present, i’m going to print photos today to make a photo album. It’s her last birthday before we all leave for uni so it’s pretty important to her. Unfortunately, I have to work beside school and can’t afford to miss work now that my holiday is over. I have my exam on thursday and I’m leaving for a trip afterwards. We all decided not to celebrate on Wednesday so we could study before the exam- and I have to work Monday and Tuesday. That doesn’t mean anyone has to cancel her celebration, I’d just join later once I’m done with work.

A and our friend F both expect me to cancel my shift and therefore drop another 70€ on her birthday that i’d otherwise make working. Me and our friend S think they (especially A) are acting completely childish and entitled expecting me to drop everything for that birthday. Btw, the plans made were to either sit and eat cake as always, or go out to eat (which S can’t do either because her exam is on Tuesday already).

So am I the asshole for expecting some compromise on this?
