Player Engagement: Bringing Neighbourhoods to life

After seeing some recent discussions about player engagement in Housing, I was reminded of a few ideas I had when the feature first launched. One of the first ideas that occurred to me was so obvious that I've already seen it brought up: Guild Halls. There were a couple of others though that I thought I'd throw out there in case there is anyone else whose interested.

Neighbourhood Brawls:

  • Expanding on the idea of Guild Halls, I wondered if it would be viable for the residents of one neighbourhood to challenge another. Then engage in a kind of capture the flag where one team defends their Hall from the attackers.
  • There's a bunch of ways this could be tweaked, with limited respawns, siege weapons or defences themed around completed endeavours or even expanded so that the flag can be carried and stashed away inside someone's house, encouraging people to arrange them defensively, with puzzles and traps.
  • This could be guild based, or expanded to 'pvp' enthusiast charters, adding another pvp option to housing to go alongside the decor duels, but bringing people back to their neighbourhoods to engage in it.

Neighbourhood Camps:

  • Connected to the idea of brawls and guild halls, I was initially curious how the endeavours would utilise the suspicious half constructed or unfinished plots scattered about the neighbourhoods. My first idea for these, aside from being potential homes for future Guild Halls, was to have them serve as bases for recruitable factions.
  • Maybe endeavours could build up rep and allow you to enlist them as a permanent addition to your neighbourhood. Maybe we could recruit other themed factions we already have rep with, like the Kirin Tor, introducing the potential to customise the theme of our neighbourhood for Guilds or groups that want to focus on a particular class or vibe.
  • We could add these one by one, with themed decor, encouraging engagement with old content through the existing rep farms, or rewarding those who wasted endless hours grinding those out before it was popular.

Neighbourhood Facilities:

  • A lot of people seem to have ruled out the idea of adding utility to housing, allowing us to add crafting stations, bank access or similar features. While I still think these would make useful additions, maybe a compromise would be possible.
  • Could we use those empty lots to launch community projects, farming resources to progress the process of erecting our own chosen features, selected by Guild Masters or voted on by the community? Would a local bank situated in a corner of the neighbourhood be so anti-social, if it encourages us to spend time in the area and see whose homes might be active enough to be worth looking into?

Neighbourhood Hotspots:

  • Expanding on the facilities idea is another option for letting us customise the lots. When I first got my house, I was really taken in by the variety of plants and fauna themed around the area, with some of them even wandering into my yard to make the place feel more active and alive.
  • I know there are plans to add pets and mounts, but couldn't we get the option to buy cages that would let us capture wild beasts and then 'release' them into designated hotspots around the area, letting us introduce a broader range of our own favoured beasties, or letting us gradually transform sections of the neighbourhood to match our preferred aesthetic?
  • Maybe we could add herbs and trees to serve as easy, but infrequent sources of particular resources we are likely to need or that we just like the look of?

Tl;dr: Add more stuff to let us customise the neighbourhood so we can feel at home in the area beyond our own little lots!
