Tennessee school district bans Alex Haley’s Roots under 2022 state law

Tennessee school district bans Alex Haley’s Roots under 2022 state law

A KCS spokesperson, Carly Harrington, confirmed the district’s decision to remove Roots from school library shelves under that law.

“As a district, we recognize the immense cultural and historical significance of Alex Haley’s Roots to our nation, to Tennessee, and particularly to the county seat of Knoxville,” Harrington said in a statement. “The decision made to remove Roots from school libraries is in no way a commentary on the literary or cultural value of the novel, but the result of adherence to state law.”

She said Roots had recently been elevated to the district’s review committee for consideration over a passage in the novel’s 84th chapter, which it determined was not “age appropriate” under Tennessee law. “Broader themes or historical significance of a work as a whole is not a consideration under the law,” Harrington added.

Black men: if you aren’t active, get active. Local elections, local school boards, local town halls and city hall meetings. Get those progressives through the primaries. Door knock and phone bank. Don’t leave it to the Divine 9, NAACP, and Urban League. It’s not enough. YOU are needed.

They think they’re slick but they really can’t tell you more loudly and clearly that they hate you and the truth of the black American experience to this day, and will happily create new laws and use every technicality therein to find a new excuse to edit our history out of American history. “Not age appropriate” today, “not enough cited sources” tomorrow.

Don’t let the retelling of these days be that you watched from the sidelines as our story was being obscured, deprecated and erased.

NYT Article: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/25/us/house-black-republicans-congress-diversity.html

'Every Black Republican Is Leaving the House, Erasing Diversity Gains'

Choice quotes:

>Eight years ago, Kevin McCarthy, then the House Republican leader, embarked on a push to recruit more Black Republicans to run for Congress, arguing that the G.O.P. needed to diversify to survive.

>By 2022, his efforts had yielded modest success, helping pave the way for four Black Republicans to be elected to the House that year, which boosted the total number of Black Republicans serving in Congress to five, including Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina.

>That progress is about to be erased.

>All four Black Republicans in the House are leaving Congress next year: Three are seeking statewide office, and one is retiring because redistricting in his state effectively boxed him out of his seat. The exodus is a reflection of the striking and persistent lack of diversity in the G.O.P. ranks of Congress, something that Mr. McCarthy has acknowledged is still an issue even years after his efforts to address it.

>“When you look at the Democrats, they actually look like America,” he said shortly after leaving Congress in 2023. “When I look at my party, we look like the most restrictive country club in America.”

...

>Republican leaders who for a time focused heavily on recruiting and electing more Black candidates appear to have allowed those efforts to flag during the second Trump presidency, as the president has denounced and eliminated diversity programsfired Black officials while installing an overwhelmingly white senior team and presided over an administration that routinely circulates material echoing white-supremacist references, including a racist meme he posted himself

...

>As some of the oldest and most powerful Black Democrats resist leaving Congress, the few Black Republicans who are serving in the House, none of whom hold leadership positions, are heading for the exit.

...

>“Republicans won’t have any Black members in the next Congress because Republicans have no interest in actually representing Black voters,” said Nebeyatt Betre, a spokeswoman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

...

>In Michigan, Amir Hassan, a Navy veteran and former law enforcement officer, is challenging Representative Kristen McDonald Rivet in a competitive district. For months, Mr. Hassan was the sole Republican running, but party leaders did not rally around him, instead creating space for two primary challengers who have recently entered the race. Mr. Hassan has not received any financial contributions from House leaders, according to his campaign filings.

...

>“It’s going to be really hard for even the most conservative Black Republican to look at this Republican Party and defend it,” said Chris Taylor, a senior adviser to the Congressional Black Caucus PAC. “This is a Republican Party that is at war with Black America.”

The tap dancing must have been exhausting. Where were these clowns thinking in the first place, though?

Video context: These 2 brothers in Austin, TX are going around their city and giving unhoused, obviously unwell people Large BuzzBallz mixed drinks (read: 15%-20% ABV, 59oz) and filming them as they become incredibly intoxicated, pass out, vomit on themselves, injure themselves, potentially critically. Presumably for the express purpose of getting them dangerously intoxicated for attention and clicks on the 'Gram/Kick, based on the phone screen they briefly flashed. The older black man laying face-down in the video hit his head on the pavement according to the person in the linked thread, who ended up confronting these 2 black men and called 911 on behalf of the uncounscious unhoused man. They accepted no responsibility for their actions, even goading the woman who confronted them by suggesting he wanted the drink. They were just helping him enjoy himself.

It goes without saying that the unhoused are NOT props or toys to use in your social media games. Having to type that actually increased my blood pressure. But beyond that...what the fuck are we doing? We're seeing this kind of "content" output regularly. People abusing the poor. People being general dickheads in public Brothers like Johnny Somali who about to serve a 6 month sentence with hard labor for his public actions (https://apnews.com/article/south-korea-johnny-somali-youtube-statue-prison-9491a8f50244798c27fa794a8f2b07e4)). People like Sneako whose story I won't even mention because, again, my blood pressure. People being cruel and unusual. And in this case, black men doing it to their elders who need help, not to be carnivalized like fucking sideshows.

Black men, be sure to spend some time with your own kids (boys AND girls) so that they don't end up like the 2 lost ones in this video. If you don't have kids, join some orgs that talk to and/or tutor Middle and High Schoolers about becoming exceptional (or at least acceptable) men and women, finishing high school, going to college/trade school. Be sure you're always teaching them compassion and love, lest they be lost to the machinations and crush of capitalism and its utter indifference (antipathy, really) to people in pursuit of wealth.

This MUST be unacceptable. If you know these 2 brothers, make a phone call and talk to them. Even if the sales pitch has to be purely self-centered (that this will hurt their future employment opportunities), make the appeal.

You are your brother's keeper.
