Escaping poverty ?

Any body got any inspirational stories on how they escaped poverty or making low income in their mid 30? I'm trying but it seems so hard and sometimes outright impossible if you don't got the proper set up. Hope my life isn't always like this

Thoughts on white people consuming black media and then trying educate black people on what it’s like to be black or grow up in the hood?

This suburban white girl just tried to tell me how the hood works because she watched snowfall LMFAO. Apparently she’s mad that Wanda and Leon are the main characters of the spin of show that take place during the gangster rap era during the 90s.

According to her I don’t know what I’m talking about and she accused me of being a white guy or suburban black dude. She’s trying to reduce Wanda’s role to just being a crackhead when she plays a significant role to Leon’s character development. She wants another show about drug dealers and street stuff.

She was basically saying because I didn’t act a certain way she didn’t really believe I was from the hood. I grew up in Memphis. Parkway Village 38118. Can’t no suburban white girl from a gated community tell me shit about growing up in the hood 😂

Gatekeeping and the Architecture of Paranoia An Essay

Having been raised in a muti/cultural-generational family this came to mind when I saw this flyer.

Gatekeeping in Black spaces often creates an atmosphere of paranoia that treats goodwill as a liability rather than a tool for growth. When community boundaries transform into rigid purity tests, the focus shifts from collective advancement to individual isolation. This environment demands that potential allies constantly prove their worth, effectively neutralizing the power of broad coalition building.

These exclusionary tactics directly mirror the historical methodologies of COINTELPRO. Intelligence agencies have long understood that the most efficient way to dismantle a movement is to exploit its internal fault lines.

By fostering mistrust and encouraging participants to police the motivations of their neighbors, communities self sabotage. When spaces prioritize nativist or lineage based divisions over shared struggles, they do the work of the oppressor for them. The energy required to maintain these barriers distracts from the vital work of confronting systemic power structures.

Solidarity is solidarity, regardless of its origin. A perspective shaped by diverse family dynamics reveals that real alignment is built on shared values and practical interaction. It requires moving beyond performative outrage and the constant scrutiny of who belongs. Healing requires a pragmatic approach to coalition building.

When individuals make a genuine effort to unlearn inherited biases, shutting them out only reinforces the very divisions the community claims to fight. Welcoming those who are striving to dismantle their own inherited hate is the only effective way to uproot that hate from the broader family tree.

Authentic community defense does not require isolation. It requires establishing strict rules against bad faith participation while simultaneously holding the door open for those operating in good faith. The goal is global solidarity. Authenticity is found in the difficult work of building bridges, not in the comfortable paranoia of policing the gates.

It is through these methods I have befriended and helped self proclaimed racists become better versions of their selves. While I am fully aware this is not always possible if we don't try then the world we leave behind will just be more of the same and the cycle will remain.

Florida governor race is the most experimental race of all time.

For context we have Byron Donald’s a black man who went to FAMU a HCBU running for governor as a republican and has a Jewish wife(not being antisemitic just painting a picture here) with a trump endorsement. So much to unpack with this alone. Versus David jolly a republican before but running for governor as a Democrat. He was a lawyer but the only highlights here is that he has always remained critical of trump for years now. As a Floridian all I can do is laugh man we are so COOKED. Like the Byron Donald’s is much to unpack here that it’s comical.

Anti-Blackness is not a deal breaker for anyone

One of the hardest things I’ve had to come to terms with over the past few years is just how universal anti-Blackness is. Almost like a currency.

White supremacy is an ideology, not something only white people can participate in, which is why you see people of color reproducing anti-Blackness and colorism, and Black people internalizing and reproducing anti-Blackness themselves.

You can even see it within different cultures. Darker-skinned Indians face colorism from their own people. Afro-Latinos face racism and anti-Blackness from other Latinos. And the irony is that the same people of color who experience anti-Blackness themselves will still turn around and be anti-Black toward Black people.

Once you notice it, you start seeing it everywhere. Even in little things like who gets empathy, grace, protection or tenderness online. Sometimes I’ll see a cute or heartfelt video involving a white or non-Black person and immediately think, would people be reacting like this if that person was Black, especially dark-skinned?

If the current administration was only coming after black folks, the outcry wouldn't be this loud. Excuses would be made every time a black person gets harmed or killed, as they did to the countless black folk who got killed over the past decade

And a lot of the time, I already know the answer.

That has probably been the most jarring part for me. Anti-Blackness crosses race, culture and nationality so easily, and somehow it is almost never a deal breaker.

Feels like my Black barber is anti-Black.

He seems to hate my natural hair and the way it "rolls up" when he cuts it. I have avoided Dominican, Rican and white barbers because I felt it important to have a Black man cut my hair. I'm now thinking I've been fooling myself. Also, I live in a large downtown area and the Black barbers are far more receptive and respectful to white clients. I can't continue to pay $50+ every two weeks for this. Is this experience just something I'm dealing with?

Democratic Socialist Angie Nixon Wins The Democratic Primary in Florida for 2026 - Defeating AIPAC's Alex Vindman & Calling Out Leadership! 🥳 🎉

Okay, okay, okay...so I know I said I don't like both sides, but this is another Win I'm excited about! I know it's still a long way to go, but it's nice to see this Amazing Woman who's on the side of Good Win this Election! And I've got no affiliation with the State of Florida!

I also wanted to make this Post as a short follow-up to the most recent one I made in this subreddit. If You're curious, Please See...

Black America Hear Me Out -- Israel Needs To Be Declared An Official Enemy Of The United States.

Black America, We need to keep Ourselves informed on not just Domestic affairs, but Geopolitical ones too! I know a lot of Y'all (assuming You're actually Black and not imposters) don't want to hear about kids in other countries getting blown up, but our money pays for those things...and some of us still wonder why everything is so expensive - like the Food, Gas, and Rent prices.

Even if You're a cynic that believes nothing is gonna change because there's always an excuse we're being given...I think especially for right now, getting the right people in at least gives us one less excuse for the politicians to keep bullshitting us -- We've seen what Mamdani has accomplished in such a short amount of time. This will also buy us some time -- The Establishment, MAGA, and Israel, have a lot of overlap and must be stopped.

...I'm starting to have a little bit more hope for the future. I know we can't vote our way out of everything and I'm not gonna sit here and tell You I'm "All In" for Democratic Socialism...but I'm willing to try it over whatever the fuck We're dealing with right now!

Lastly, I wanted to share some resources that can help You find a candidate that's right for You. If You Don't Acquire Knowledge, You Can't Acquire Freedom...Question Everything, As You Should!

Useful Online Resources & How You Can Help!

No money is required to help, however the best way You can do so is by raising awareness on how the Establishment Class Traitors exploit this loophole whenever you see the opportunity -- sharing information with Your peers (For Black Youth in particular, I would suggest having conversations with You Elders and Peers to gauge how they think and maybe persuade them to Vote in interests that would have greater positive future impacts), running Your own In-Person/Online campaigns, and finding a political candidate that aligns not only with Your demands (and You SHOULD have demands), but also takes a firm stance against Israel!

Here are some resources that are relevant to this message:

Not My Tax Dollars

  • This is a website where You can search up exactly how much of Your Tax Dollars every State, City, or Town has been sending to Israel. It also allows You to Share Statistics, Contact Your Congressman, or Donate.

Track AIPAC

  • This is a website that keeps track of every Politician that has taken funding from the Pro-Israel lobby, AIPAC -- It allows You to search for specific Representatives in every district. This website also informs You of candidates that are endorsed by groups in opposition to AIPAC. There is also a Store where You can buy Merchandise, or Donate.

VoteLog

  • This is a website that tracks how United States congress members vote in regards to bills that pertain to America, Israel, and Palestine. Many congress members are very deceptive in their voting practices -- there is a more private 'ruling vote', followed by the more well known 'final passage vote' -- so a congress members voting history says a lot about them. You can also Donate.

AZAPAC (Anti-Zionist of America PAC)

  • This is a website for a recently formed PAC whose primary objective is to remove the influence of Zionism in the United States -- Members of AZAPAC are also running for seats in the Senate. You can also Donate.

TL;DR - If Israel was recognized as an Enemy of the United States, then U.S. Officials supporting Israel could then Officially be charged with Treason. We need to keep applying Social and Political pressure to further drive the wedge between the United States and Israel -- Anyone seeking a Political position MUST be challenged on their stance regarding Israel, either they are for Israel or against Israel. We can continue to compound this pressure by spreading awareness to as many people as possible!

Anybody wear cowboy hats?

Just a little fun convo aside from the real issues.

I like the look but never owned one until now. Impulsively, I bought a nice one, had it fitted with the steam thing and “branded” with my initials….now I’m flummoxed on what to wear with it.

If you wear one, what do you style it with? Do you find it cumbersome if, for example going to a decent restaurant with your wife/gf? How about concerts or ball games?

Virgil Hawkins (namesake of the cartoon superhero) was a black lawyer who spent decades fighting to practice law after being rejected from the UF Law School due to his race. After opening his law office at 69 and then forced to resign from the bar, he was posthumously reinstated by public petition.

From Virgil Hawkins Florida Chapter National Bar Association's website:

In April 1949, Virgil D. Hawkins, a former faculty member of Bethune-Cookman College, applied for admission to the University of Florida’s law school. He was academically eligible and possessed appropriate life experience qualifications. However, the long road to achieving his goal of becoming a lawyer would force him to persevere for nine more years and overcome Florida’s Jim Crow laws that racially segregated its state universities. His journey would eventually open the doors of Florida’s public universities to African Americans, although not to him.

In May of 1949, the University of Florida, through the Florida Board of Control (later Board of Regents), denied his admission (as well as five other African-American graduate school applicants) based solely upon race. Mr. Hawkins sought relief through the Florida Supreme Court. The Court acknowledged that he possessed “all the scholastic, moral and other qualifications except as to race and color” for admission (State ex rel. Hawkins, 47 So. 2d 608, 609 (Fla. 1950)).

He did not prevail due to the Court’s finding that under the Equal Protection Clause, Florida could pay for his legal education in a different state or Florida would build a law school for black students [at Florida A&M University]. Both findings defied U.S. Supreme Court rulings in the 1938 Gaines case (Missouri) and the 1950 Sweatt case (Texas), decided prior to Florida’s 1950 decision.

In 1954, the United States Supreme Court ordered the public schools desegregated “with all deliberate speed” by 1956 in Brown v. Board of Education and in a companion decision ordered the University of Florida to admit Virgil Hawkins However, Virgil Hawkins was still not admitted to the University of Florida. Petitioning for his admission to the University of Florida College of Law, Mr. Hawkins eventually went before the Florida Supreme Court three times and the United States Supreme Court twice. After the U.S. Supreme Court ordered Florida to immediately enroll him in 1957, the Florida Supreme Court concluded that federal law could be superseded by state law in some instances (the now-discredited “interposition” doctrine). Florida Supreme Court Oral Argument Press Summaries (see public information summaries, oral argument 5-99).

In 1958, Hawkins sought to enforce his U.S. Supreme Court decision in Florida’s federal District Court. In 1949, Florida had minimal requirements for law school applicants.  It did not require that applicants take the LSAT or even have a BA degree.  To oppose Hawkins in 1958, Florida retroactively imposed a minimum LSAT score, beyond what Hawkins had attained.  Despite the illegal defiance of the U.S. Supreme Court, Florida also claimed Hawkins was morally unqualified to attend UF.  Sandbagged by these defenses, Hawkins’ counsel informed him they could not prevail and would not continue to seek his admission to UF. When Judge DeVane informed the litigants that he would sign a desegregation order if Hawkins was not awarded relief, Hawkins consented to the inevitable.  Consistent with all of the prior unlawful court decisions, DeVane granted relief to the class of UF applicants Hawkins represented but denied relief to Hawkins, the named plaintiff.  In her memoirs, Constance Baker Motley explained: “There was a serious legal difficulty with Judge DeVane’s order, which we and the state consciously overlooked.”  On September 15, 1958, George Starke was admitted to the College of Law, UF’s first African-American law student. Mr. Hawkins’ efforts to desegregate UF law school led the way for the desegregation of the entire State University System in Florida. In 1962, W. George Allen became the first African-American to graduate from the University of Florida College of Law.

Mr. Hawkins eventually received his J.D. 27 years after first applying to the University of Florida. Upon graduation, he stated his goal was to offer legal assistance to “people, just barely making a living, who don’t qualify for legal aid, but still can’t afford to hire an attorney.” In 1976, he appeared before the Florida Board of Bar Examiners. His application to take the Florida Bar Examination had been denied because the Massachusetts law school from which he had graduated was not accredited by the American Bar Association, a formerly segregated organization. Returning to Florida, he worked behind the scenes with the civil rights legal work of Joseph Hatchett and Leander Shaw. After a successful appeal, at the age of 69, Mr. Hawkins took his oath of office and became a member of The Florida Bar by special waiver.

What is the ideology of Black Conservatives?

I grew up in the South with a lot of older Black moderate Democrats, but I never really encountered many Black conservatives, i.e., your CJ Pearson or Candace Owens. I had a debate on campus with another student about black conservatism. I'm of the firm belief that American Black conservatism stems from self-hatred, but then I thought about it, and I don't really know any black conservatives outside of the YouTubers.

If there are any black conservatives here, what are some of your core beliefs?

A Response to ESSENCE’s Top 50 R&B Song of All Time

You might have seen that Essence magazine recently released their list of the 50 Greatest R&B Songs of All Time. It’s a pretty marvelous list, filled with some of the most talented artists and most moving songs ever created. In my opinion, they got a lot right. Their list is definitely better than some of those othermagazines and sites that try to compile the best of what musical artists have to offer and wind up showing just how much they don’t know music. I would quibble with some of the positions of artists and some of the some choices for particular artists, but Essence did pretty good—though, no Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin is diabolical!

In any event, Essence extended an invitation in the write-up of their list. They said: So yes, debate the rankings. Tell us what should have been higher. Tell us what we missed. Defend your favorite with your whole chest. That's part of loving R&B, too.
They ain’t have to tell me but one time!
