Massive Chandelure fan. I was disappointed when I've seen it's stats in ZA. They weren't terrible, but I find it a bit odd to bolster it's defenses so much when it has a base hp of 60. I was hoping it would have been a bit... faster? I just think it's much easier for a mon to cater to offense because it usually relies on just their attacking stat and speed, while defensive mons rely on hp, def, and sp.def. I was hoping, like many others that it would get a good ability, but alas it was infiltrator. (Side tangent: I know not every Pokémon has to be good, but with Megas it feels like a waste to not make an active effort. They outclass everything in the campaign of the main series, making them a cakewalk when accessible that it feels like the only way to use them and have fun IS in a more demanding setting that right now only competitive offers).
It's 90 speed is awkward to say the least, making it not the best choice for tailwind nor trick room. And on sun team, why even bother? Just use Zard Y. I do think it has a good match-up into sun teams on it's own and I think it has a good match-up into Mega Frosslass teams (not thst it's anything to write home about) so I tried focusing on that with a Tailwind team that has Mega Chan being fast enough to outspeed Chlorophyll Venusuar when under Tailwind. I wasn't playing as consistently as I had hoped, so I changed a few Pokémon and somehow did worse. A lot of the time Tailwind doesn't feel like very good speed control for outpacing things. It's hard to care about outspeeding things under tailwind because when your opponent also runs tailwind you don't really giant anything because the speed advantage doesn't move.
After that I tried Trick Room. Despite it being way too fast for Hard Trick Room, I do think it has one thing going for it: it doesn't have to commit due to it's ability to set it's own Trick Room. You don't need to reposition any Pokémon when trying to set it up or go on the attack, it can do both. Are you naturally faster tham your opponent? Don't click it. Do your opponent's Pokémon outspeed yours? Click it, no need to switch Farigiraf in. I threw this team together haphazardly so it was a bit awkward, but it is technically the best performing (3/4 games won, not impressive just thought it was funny). I realized the team was awkward in many ways due to that though and dialed it back to the Tailwind team
Then I've seen Wolfey's Mega Chandelure video earlier today and seen it was Tailroom. I thought it was interesting as it capitalizes on Chan's middling speed and turns one of it's banes into a boon. Maybe I gave up too quickly, but I couldn't make it work. I did change a few things around, like running Rotom Wash over Basculegion and running Sunny Day on Whimsicott over encore. Things that I didn't think would matter too much and make the team better align with my preferences.
Honestly, I wonder if it's even worth trying to run Mega Chan or if it's a lost cause at this point. If anyone has any ideas for things that Mega Chan could be uniquely good at it would be nice to hear. Or if I need to stop chasing this pipe dream you can tell me that too.
