PHILIPPINE NAVY FRIGATE TIMELINE: 1960 TO PRESENT

Frigates, previously known as Destroyer Escorts (DEs), served as the Philippine Navy’s primary anti-submarine warfare and escort vessels during the Cold War. Together with Patrol Craft Escorts (PCEs), they played an important role in protecting naval units, monitoring maritime activities, and maintaining a naval presence in Philippine waters. Their main purpose was to detect and counter submarine threats while providing escort protection to larger ships and convoys.

As an archipelagic nation, the Philippines required naval vessels capable of operating beyond coastal waters for extended periods. Because of this, the Philippine Navy used frigates and PCEs not only for anti-submarine missions but also for offshore patrol operations. These ships regularly conducted territorial patrols, maritime surveillance, and security operations in areas of strategic importance to the country.

The Philippine Navy emphasized their role as offshore combat patrol vessels focused on maritime external defense and the protection of national territory. Their ability to remain at sea for longer periods allowed them to monitor sea lines of communication, respond to security concerns, and maintain a continuous presence in areas under Philippine jurisdiction. While anti-submarine warfare remained an important mission, their operational use expanded to meet the broader requirements of territorial defense and maritime security.

In practice, these vessels became some of the Navy’s most important assets for maintaining presence and asserting sovereignty at sea during the Cold War period. Their service reflected the Philippine Navy’s need for ships that could perform both combat and patrol functions, making them key components of the country’s offshore defense capability.
