Enlisting as a Sailor in yhe Philippine Navy

Had to stop attending college due to personal reasons and am now setting my sights on enlisting as a sailor in the Philippine Navy by next year. I’d like to ask what can I do to help prepare myself for the training? Right now I’m just exercising and getting myself in better shape especially endurance-wise — since I have asthma — and minsan nirereview ko din mga notes namin sa Naval ROTC pero ano pa kaya ang pwede gagawin?

TIA!

Canada eyes investments in Philippine defense industry after visiting forces deal

Canada is looking to invest in the Philippine defense industry following the two nation’s signing of a Status of Visiting Forces Agreement (SOVFA), a move that Manila sees as key to its military modernization push amid growing security challenges in the region.

Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. raised the prospect of deeper defense trade ties during a meeting with Canadian Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City last week, according to a DND statement released on Monday, May 18.

During the meeting, Teodoro highlighted the strategic significance of establishing a defense trade partnership with Canada, noting that Ottawa’s expertise “complements the Philippines’ modernization goals.”

The meeting came months after Manila and Ottawa signed the SOVFA on Nov. 2, 2025, providing a legal framework for visits and joint activities involving Filipino and Canadian troops.

The DND has pushed for more security partnerships with like-minded countries as tensions continue in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

Sidhu, for his part, reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to supporting the Philippines’ defense priorities and expressed interest in investing in the local defense sector “across cyber, air, land, and maritime domains.”

Canada also underscored the importance of securing defense supply chains as geopolitical tensions reshape global security and trade arrangements.

The Philippines and Canada have expanded defense ties over the past decade through government-to-government transactions and military engagements.

The DND noted that cooperation between the two countries dates back to 2013 following the signing of a 2012 memorandum of understanding between the defense department and the Canadian Commercial Corporation covering defense and military-related equipment and services.

Under the arrangement, the Philippines acquired eight Bell 412EP helicopters from Canada for military operations and disaster response missions.

The latest talks also tackled the possible integration of Canadian technology into Philippine defense systems to improve interoperability and strengthen defense capabilities, according to the DND.

Both sides said they were looking to further expand bilateral defense cooperation as Manila accelerates the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Hello po, I’m a newly licensed medtech and I want to join the PAF. Is there a possibility na makapasok and work under their hospitals instead of being assigned somewhere else? I want to join sana ‘cause I am also planning to proceed for military medicine someday. And what exam should I take to qualify? Nakapasa na po ako ng afpsat under the army, other than that, wala pa po akong na take na ibang exam.

Why did the Navy Surface Team won?

So why did the Pro Surface Group won?

My Hypothesis:

For the budgeted 110B for the Submarine Program, add for overruns and such. We would only get 2 Submarines with very green crews, no existing DOTMLPF, and longer lead times.

As such the PN is leaving the subsurface warfare to our more established allies. Thus leaving the PN the responsibility to secure abd dominate our own waterways, and that could only be done by having sufficient surface assets.

With the budget "freed" up, they can buy

2x MIGUEL MALVARS F2

6X RAJAH SULAYMAN F2

2X AAW FRIGATE

And all these assets are from available RUMINT.

Its very evident that the PN has no existing ship capable of fleet defenses. MD has hinted before that AAW Frigate might be next on the prio list

Budget speaking, the Koreans could probably squeeze in Mk41s and KVLS with AESA IMast in a theoretical cost of 30B or more. Ammo like SM2s could be sourced from PERA?

Wildcard would be the Mogamis with Japan actively trying to supply us with defense materiel. But Mogamis as is is already expensive and would be more expensive if it is AAW oriented.

Wishful thinking would be to see both the HDF4500/6000 and Mogamis forming the frontline force backed by the MMCF and RSC

An explanation on the lack of Air-Launched and Land-Based C-Stars

I've noticed a few comments wondering or questioning why there isn't any land-based and/or air-launched C-Star Missile so I'm gonna address it here based on a day of research from existing sources that I already have.

The Air-Launched C-Stars

While proposals have been made since the early 2000's to develop an Air-Launched C-Star with even the ROKN testing a C-Star on its P-3 Orions, the interests of the ROKN simply wasn't there, this is the same sentiments shared by the ROKAF. Both the ROKN and ROKAF have access to the AGM-84 Harpoon Block II/II+ and AGM-84H/K SLAM-ER Missiles which both the ROKAF and ROKN believes is sufficient enough to neutralize KPAN (North Korean Navy) vessels; at the same time also gives the Koreans the moment to save its budget from developing an Air-Launched C-Star as existing missiles can already fill the role.

Fast forward to the 2020's, with the KPAN slowly developing its conventional force and the PLAN rapidly on the rise, the case of developing an Air Launched Anti-Ship Missile came into fruition again; the ADD (South Korean Defense R&D body) has unveiled the development of the Supersonic Air-to-Ship-II Guided Missile with a diameter of 400mm that is planned to be fitted to the KF-21 though the development and confirmed mass production remains uncertain as South Korean lawmakers are questioning the feasability of developing such a missile.

Nevertheless, going back to the C-Star, with the Koreans focusing on the development of the Supersonic Air-to-Ship-II Guided Missile, it is highly likely that the Koreans has abandoned any form of development of an Air-Launched C-Star.

The Land-Based C-Stars

The reasons for the lack of a Coastal Haesong platform is likely the same as in the second paragraph, the ROKN utilizes Harpoons for Coastal Defense purposes with the 811th deployed at the East Sea and the 821st and 822nd deployed at the highly volatile West Sea all equipped with Land-based Harpoons; same as what I said earlier, its possible the ROKN had no use for a Land-Based C-Star Coastal Battery with the Harpoons already being available to fill in the role. In addition to the lack of major KPAN logistics vessels to do large amphibious landings with smaller major KPAN landings done by hovercrafts could easily be countered by the ROKMC's inexpensive Bigung Coastal Guided Rockets.

Fast forward again, along with the Air-to-Ship-II Guided Missile, ADD also announced the development of the Korean Supersonic Anti-Ship Missile which is likely to replace the C-Star missile in the future with documents stating that it may also be used for land-based purposes which likely means the Harpoon TEL's will be replaced.

For the PN

With the absence of existing C-Star in both Air-Launched and Land-Based configuration, the PN has the option to propose or request to LIGNex1 to develop/produce a C-Star missile on both respective roles but that would likely take time and cost which the PN cannot afford.

It would be in the best interest for the PN to purchase existing anti-ship missiles that have both Air-Launched and Land-Based configurations such as with the Japanese Type 12 Missile or Type 90 Missile and the American-Norwegian NSM Missile.
