Cunard upgrade prices !

Hi. I'm booked onto a Cunard cruise in November with my Mum, we have a Britannia Balcony cabin booked each. I was interested to see how much an upgrade would be to either Princess or Queens Grill. As we need cabins near to each other (she's 87) I thought I would call see what they could offer me rather than chance the bidding thing as we could end up on different decks or even dining separately if one was accepted and the other not!

When I called the lady was really helpful, and they've got loads of availability especially Princess Grill cabins. However I was quite shocked that the prices she was quoting me to upgrade were much higher than if I booked the cabin today as a new customer (I checked while talking to her). I'm talking £800 to £1500 per cabin difference. To be clear, I fully expect to pay to upgrade, but feel like they are ripping me off After 10 minutes of debating their dubious business model and her not budging she's offered to get a manager to call me, although i'm not holding my breath.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get a "better" price? Shall I be persistent and try again? Or leave it to a few days before we sail? We've sailed with them before and my mum is really happy in the Britannia cabins but I thought I would treat her to the upgrade as a surprise as it's her birthday while we were away.
