It’s a bit undercooked bcs I was in a rush, but it has potential
For context: there was a post saying “do we like fishing” and I replied “I don’t like killing animals for fun that much” causing much expected controversy.
One guy said
“Fishing is not animal abuse. It's providing food for our bodies and has been practiced for thousands if not millions of years, and is more efficient and less painful for the fish now more than ever. Also, do you think anyone here really even cares what you have to say? If you want people to change their minds about something, Reddit is not the place to try to convince them. I suspect, however, that you know that, and really just enjoy the engagement and argument more than anything.”
To which I replied
“
”
To which he replied
“1. You're wrong. Humane slaughter is painless and immediate, and ethical farming provides animals with a better life than they would ever have in the wild, with more consistent and complete food sources, protection from predators that would literally eat them alive, and disease prevention and treatment.
2. All food sources kill. Plants are alive too, and there's more and more research that suggests they feel a form of pain, though it's likely very different from how we experience it.
3. The number of people who have practiced slavery vs the number of people who have eaten meat is astronomically low. That's comparing a fraction of the total historical population to around 95% of humanity.
4. Not of humans, no. But humans are above animals in terms of inherent value. All of our moral laws and ethics are based around what's best for humanity. We apply some of those to animals, but the fact remains that animals are lower life forms and do not have nearly the same capacity for thought, pain, wishes, or even a concept of right and wrong.
5, 6, 7. I'm not saying it's wrong to stand up for what you believe in. I'm simply saying Reddit is not the best place to do that, as most people on here are simply here for the entertainment. I'm sure there are other organizations/efforts you could be a part of that have more of an effect and a larger voice.
I don't have much more to say on the subject. If you'd like to continue a respectful, level-headed discussion I have no problem with that, but if not then I wish you the best.”
After which I decided it was hopeless to talk with someone who pulls information out of his ass and has no idea of how anything works
Sorry for the insanely long post
