Number of additional AB needed to make checking swing less valuable

I’ve heard that checking your swing is really harmful for your wrists. I’m assuming that if you never check swung, your wrists would be healthier for longer and you could play longer. If this is the case, how many extra ABs would you need to have such that you will have had more value if you never check swung (Assuming ABs are i.i.d)? You can use whatever metric of value you think fits best.

Basically asking if never checking swing could be a viable strategy for an individual career (not sure about team strategy because that’s much harder to analyze).

Why don’t runners always tag up on deep fly balls

(Context here is I’m a Phillies fan) I constantly see plays where there’s a runner on first, no outs (or maybe 1 out), and a fly ball hit like 360+ feet and caught for an out, and the runner just goes and has to double back. Like last night Derek Hill hit a 385 foot fly out with Marsh on first and he didn’t tag up. It seems simple to weigh if the ball is easily catchable, and if it is, wait on the bag.

Why do bad switch hitters not just bat on one side?

This is about Rafael Marchan. He’s hitting .106 with a .322 OPS this season as a switch hitter (career .206 BA and .596 OPS). Wouldn’t it be worth it to just bat righty and stop trying to maintain both swings?

Why do baseball fans reject Bayesian stats?

For example, I’ve seen arguments about Jesus Luzardo being a bad pitcher, and whenever I bring up his road numbers, i always get the same response: “If you remove anyone’s bad games, they’ll be good.” This makes no sense to me because it’s such a simple and clean condition. Why do MLB fans only listen to frequentist stats?

Gap Year, trying to get adjunct position

I’ve applied for PhDs (in Theoretical Computer Science) the last 2 cycles. My first cycle i got one interview and no acceptances, last cycle i got 1 interview and 2 acceptances but the programs weren’t the right fit. So I’m taking a gap year (or maybe 2) to improve my application.

My advisors and I came up with 2 plans: get an adjunct teaching job, and write to a small list of profs they compiled and try to do some research with them (and maybe get another letter to replace my least strong letter).

I don’t have any experience writing a letter of interest for the adjunct teaching positions, but I do have my statement of purpose from my applications this past cycle. Is there a lot of overlap between what’s expected on both? Do you have any advice for applying for these jobs with only an MS?

And lastly, do these seem like good plans, or is there something else you think I should consider?

Around a year ago I saw Howard Li do a mashup of Its Only Smiles and Smile’s choruses. I wanted to try to extend it to the whole song and maybe move some parts around, but for some reason one of them sounds out of tune. Does anyone know why that is? I’m using reaper’s pitch correct when changing tempo, so I doubt it’s that.
