CMI MSDS vs ISI M.Stat – Academic focus, industry readiness, and placements

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to decide between CMI MSDS and ISI M.Stat, with the goal of working in industry after graduation—especially in data science, analytics, quantitative roles, ML, etc. I’d really appreciate insights from current students, alumni, or anyone familiar with these programs.

Some questions I have:

  1. How are the recent placements for each program?
  2. What types of companies and roles usually recruit from CMI MSDS and ISI M.Stat?
  3. How do the programs compare in terms of industry readiness?

I’m also curious about a few specific points:

  • ISI M.Stat is reputed to be mathematically rigorous. For someone not from a strong statistics background, how challenging is it in practice?
  • I’ve heard that ISI’s workload is very demanding, whereas CMI MSDS may allow more time for projects, internships, or skill-building outside of coursework. Does this extra time translate into stronger CVs or better industry prospects?
  • Is CMI’s MSDS curriculum more aligned with applied industry work (data science, machine learning, programming, etc.) compared to the more theoretical focus of ISI M.Stat?
  • Overall, if the primary goal is industry placement rather than research, which program tends to offer a better balance between learning, practical exposure, and placement opportunities?

Any recent experiences, advice, or perspectives regarding academics, placements, or long-term career outcomes would be highly appreciated.

Thanks!

CMI MSDS vs ISI M.Stat for industry placements and career prospects

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to decide between CMI MSDS and ISI M.Stat, with the primary goal of working in industry after graduation (data science, analytics, quant, ML, etc.).

I've seen mixed opinions regarding placements, so I'd appreciate insights from current students, alumni, or anyone familiar with these programs.

Some questions I have:

  1. How are the recent placements for CMI MSDS?
  2. What types of companies and roles usually recruit from the program?
  3. How does CMI MSDS compare with ISI M.Stat in terms of industry opportunities?

A few specific points I'm curious about:

  • I've often heard that ISI M.Stat can be quite mathematically rigorous, especially for students who do not come from a strong statistics background. How true is this in practice?
  • I've also been told that the workload at ISI can be very demanding, whereas CMI MSDS may leave more time for projects, internships, competitions, open-source work, or skill development outside coursework.
  • If that's the case, does the additional time available at CMI translate into a stronger CV and better industry prospects?
  • Is the MSDS curriculum at CMI more aligned with industry needs (data science, machine learning, computing, programming, etc.) compared to the more theoretical focus of ISI M.Stat?

I'd be grateful for any recent experiences or perspectives regarding academics, placements, and long-term career outcomes.

Thanks!
