Pride Flag at neighborhood Waldorf school
Hello! I have two kids still years out from school age, and there is a Waldorf school in my neighborhood which caught my attention and consideration. I’ve only recently begun to look into what Waldorf even is, and from what I understand of it, it resonates with me in many ways. I’ve begun to really consider it for my kids!
I have a question for you who understand the philosophy more deeply than I.
The Waldorf school in my neighborhood has a pride flag hanging from outside a classroom that I’ve noticed while driving by. This struck me as odd and potentially not in line with what the heart of Waldorf seems to be (again, as someone who does not understand the base of these philosophies fully).
Here’s why:
From what I understand, Waldorf is story-centric. Oral storytelling. Ancient stories. Our best stories. Stories that have shaped many. Local stories. Family stories. I love this and agree with how crucial and central stories are to people and especially kids.
The Pride flag strikes me as odd and kind of rubs my the wrong way, because it seems to not be aligned with stories as the way of learning and identifying, and instead uses a very modern way of reflecting association and identification. A flag such as a pride flag but really any flag at all seems to be the opposite of this kind of educational philosophy. It is not a story at all. It is an image. It’s a modern image that is used to reflect and showcase one’s beliefs, morals, associations and identities.
Is this not opposite of the point of the whole thing??
Thank you so much for helping me understand!
All thoughts are appreciated.
