Husband has been paying for a life insurance policy for nearly 3 years - Insurance Company says he “doesn’t exist in their system”. What do we do?

Husband has been paying anywhere from $72-$36 per check (paid bi-monthly) since Dec 2023. Today he found out the company he works for no longer works for/with the life insurance company. He called to find out how he could cancel his policy and the Agent told him that he does not exist in their system. Okay but he still has payments taken each check. What are our options here? That‘s quite a bit of money to just disappear
