Where do I go from here? Left state job for private sector and fired after 1 month
I'll try to keep this as brief as possible.
I had a spotty job history but last year got in with the state with a low paying but pretty easy clerical job. Before that I did random things like USPS, law firm, but all generally under 2 years. I got sober in the time I started doing well at this state job, but the pressure to stay in the clerical career track was unattractive and the pay was very low (~$18/hr). I have a degree.
I took a chance with this B2B business, <25 people in admin. The pay was better at $24/hr, but the personality of the manager was extremely difficult to put it lightly. I had customer facing roles before and knew that my best bet was to be as passive as possible, but I began to cry when a small mistake took place in a training and she began to ask about my facial expressions after weeks of things like: phrases such as "retarded" had been used to describe other people, obsessing over my notes. It was very uncomfortable and I was seated 3 feet from her in an open floor plan. Poor advice was given that I should go back.
After I had to take a break to calm down, we had a meeting where I brought up again how I didn't feel comfortable asking her questions because she would seem annoyed, and she would mutter under her breath as well. Of course I didn't say the second part, but I did also want to explain to her that comments about my facial expression, my hair, her general lack of filtering and unprofessional comments (again not phrased that way) were making the process hard for me to learn. She told me she wants me there, and that there were a lot of good parts of having me around. She had also been asking me for feedback in this meeting, so I did not provide it unsolicited.
Under poor advice, I went back (she liked to casually mention that a lot of people would leave on their lunch break**) and today she and the owner let me go for not being fast enough. I thought I would have at least 3 months before an action like this.
Aside from being devastated in that she told me she wanted me there, and I thought I was progressing not only at the job but life in general after a spotty work history, I am at a loss. I left my state job after 1 year of employment with some time as a temporary secretary, but I was hoping to branch into a professional line of work. I do not want to go back to that exact clerical job, but I keep hearing how the job market is nuts right now and I did not expect this to happen right now.
Do I try and go back to the clerical job, learn my lesson and avoid small companies, further work on myself? I don't think I should put this 1 month of experience on my resume, but now that it's been about 2 months since I left the state, I don't know what to say to explain this most recent gap.
**Edited to add that they would leave PERMANENTLY, lol
