AITJ for causing trillions in damage in the pursuit of justice?
I (60M) am a lieutenant detective in my local police department. I am part of a specialized task force that is tasked with uncovering and stopping large scale conspiracies.
Recently my partner and friend (40M) was shot in the line of duty while performing a routine inspection of our city’s docks. He survived but was in critical condition, barely able to speak, let alone tell us who was behind this. An initial sweep of the crime scene found evidence that implicated a notable billionaire in our town being the culprit, though it wasn’t enough to convict. Even more crucially, some recent threats gave credible reason to believe the billionaire was going to assassinate a visiting monarch. Due to the sensitive nature of this case, chief tasked me with finding evidence to bring him to justice.
To gather evidence, I arrived at the billionaire’s mansion under the guise of a social visit. Once he left the room I began to go through his belongings searching for proof. However, due to a misjudgment of my detective abilities, I accidentally set fire to his desk, broke several priceless objects, and killed his two prized fish. Even as I was making my escape, I accidentally crawled into his neighbors bathroom, scaring her into calling the cops on me, leading to my task force almost being disbanded.
Additionally, when finally confronting the billionaire before he harmed the visiting monarch, he brainwashed my girlfriend into trying to kill me. I was able to deescalate the situation, but my actions accidentally led to the untimely and painful death of the billionaire. Some people are saying the billions in damage and the loss of a beloved public figure was not worth the result, but I was just following orders and was ultimately successful in avenging my friend and stopping an assassination attempt.
My question Reddit is, AITJ?
