Did they call Robert Gascoyne-Cecil 'Gazza'? No.

Today’s pod asked if British Prime Minister Robert Gascoyne-Cecil (1830-1903) was ever called Gazza. So, I had to check. According to Hansard he wasn’t. Maybe he was called it outside of Parliament, but never in the chamber.

Then I got to thinking, when was ‘Gazza’ first uttered in Parliament. The answer is 22 October 1990 by Dennis Skinner MP (The Beast of Bolsover). He was worried about trade unions coming up against a stuffy old judge in court:

>What would happen if the union ran into a judge like Justice Harman, who did not even know who Gazza was?

That got me thinking, how long was it between Gazza making his debut and then being mentioned in Parliament. 2,018 days.

That got me thinking, which footballer has had the most meteoric rise to Parliamentary stardom?

True to form, it was Wayne Rooney, whose rise to Parliamentary fame mirrored his rapid rise to footballing stardom. It took him just 474 from professional debut to being mentioned in Parliament.

That got me thinking, who might break Rooney’s record? Rio Ngumoha has yet to be mentioned in Parliament and he is already 493 days into his career. However, if Arsenal starlet Max Dowman were to be mentioned before 10^(th) December this year he will take the record. Perhaps in Sir Keir’s farewell speech when it comes?

Who had to wait the longest for their Parliamentary recognition? So far, the longest I’ve found is Peter Shilton’s 9,713 day (26 years!) wait.

Then I started thinking, who is the most famous player never to have been mentioned? My inexhaustive search so far has turned up Kieran Trippier (54 England caps. No debates on betting in sport?) and Ledley King (21 caps).

Some less well known players have snuck in one mention. Some notable one-mention-wonders are Darius Vassell, Kieran Dyer, John Stones and Joe Hart.

Then I started thinking, who has been mentioned the most. As far as I can tell the most mentions goes, inevitably, to David Beckham (97 mentions). (David James actually has 1,672 mentions but most of those are an early twentieth century MP of the same name).

Then I wondered if this can help us identify the GOAT. Pele has 23 mentions to Maradona’s 5. Crisitano Ronaldo has 7 to Lionel Messi’s 4.

The link to the searchable database on Hansard if you want to join in the fun. I have to stop now to go and see what interesting new ways Spurs can find to implode against Chelsea.
