Looking for a path to ease into riding and getting licensed

My dream vehicle is a Vespa, so I'm not trying to ride an absolute hog or anything, but I still find the whole thing pretty daunting. My main reason for wanting to ride is so that I can save money on gas and insurance since my current car (despite only costing $1800 when I bought it) runs me $200/month in insurance and takes premium gas. My friend taught me how to ride a bicycle in January this year, and we both took the MSF basic rider course last month. I learned a good bit for sure, but the riding portion moved way too fast for me, and I just wasn't comfortable. So I talked to the instructor and ended up stepping out about halfway through the first day. That was definitely demoralizing, but I don't want to give up entirely. I'm considering picking up a cheap 50cc moped that I can ride around my neighborhood and learn at my own pace. Then when I feel good about everything get like a 150cc moped to take the DMV test and be my daily driver. If I can get proficient, I'd still be interested in taking the course again down the line because it's important to me that I ride safely if I'm going to at all.

I'd love to hear any general advice or recommendations. I suppose it's possible that riding just isn't for me, but I still want to give it a real shot before I give up on the dream you know.
