What tourists should know before booking a photoshoot in Portugal

I help travelers plan photoshoots in Portugal, and these are a few things I wish more people knew before booking.

First, light matters more than the exact location. Portugal has beautiful light, but in the middle of the day it can be very harsh, especially in summer.

If you’re planning a photoshoot in Lisbon between May and September, early morning or the last hour before sunset will usually work much better than midday.

Not every beautiful place is actually comfortable for photos. For example, Alfama is very charming and romantic, but it can be difficult with small children, strollers, heels or tired family members. Sometimes a simpler location with more space gives you much better photos because everyone feels more relaxed.

Price is not the only thing to look at. Of course, budget matters, but style, experience, communication and how comfortable the photographer makes you feel are just as important.

Before booking, it also helps to understand what kind of style you want: editorial, lifestyle, romantic, documentary, playful family photos, beach session, city walk, proposal, maternity, etc. Different photographers can create very different moods.

And for tourists, I think one of the most important things is choosing someone who can create connection quickly. When you’re traveling, you usually don’t have much time, and you may feel awkward in front of the camera at first. A good travel photographer should help you relax, guide you gently and make the experience feel easy.

Wishing you a beautiful trip and photos that will bring you back to that feeling for years to come.
