Reality is a dream that is causally structured
Neuroscience has come to the conclusion that our perception is our predictions corrected by our sensory stimuli.
Our brain is continuously predicting what our environment looks like and the sensory stimuli are transmitted to the brain by the thalamus only if there is a difference between the brain's predictive modeling and the stimuli. If the sensory stimuli match with the brain's predictive modeling, the thalamus filters out the stimuli to optimize the process.
Sensory stimuli comes from inside our body, they are electric impulses conveyed by our nervous system.
Scientific mateliarism postulates that the electric impulses that we call sensory stimuli reflect the existence of an external "reality". But actually there is no definite proof that reality really exists and that the electric impulses are not instead purely self-generated. The existence of reality is only a postulate.
When we dream, the brain works pretty much like when we are awake. That's why it's called paradoxal sleep, it doesn't sound like sleep at all when looking at the brain.
During paradoxal sleep, the brain does its usual predictive modeling activities.
The main physiological difference are that the prefontal cortex is turned off and that the brainstem orders the thalamus to turn down the sensory stimuli. The prefontal cortex is responsible for generating the logical control (things such as time, space and what we call physical laws).
So when we dream, there is not the two keys corrective feedback mechanisms that occur when awake. The brainstem has ordered the thalamus to turn off the sensory corrective mechanism and the logical control is also turned off because the prefontal cortex is off.
The physiological mechanism that shapes our perception when we are awake is basically the same physiological mechanism that occurs during a dream, with the only two differences being that the sensory corrective mechanism and the coherence controlling mechanism are both back online.
But as I said, there is no proof that the sensory electrical impulses reflect something external. So we are left with physical laws, time and space as the only hints that an external world exists.
Kant understood that space, time and causality are actually coming from the human mind. Hume and Nietzsche understood that what we call physical "laws" are only habits of the mind.
We are sharing expectations, those shared expectactions are what structures our perception enough to think reality exist. The most universally shared expectactions are those of time, space and causality. The prefontal cortex is the enforcer of logical coherence and the root of our belief in a shared reality.
In sociology, Goffman came up with the concept of frame. A frame is the shared meaning of a social interaction. Since everyone is continuously creating its own reality within his own mind, when two people meet there is a frame uncertainty: "we both live in two different worlds, how will the differences be reconciled?".
The frame uncertainty need to be settled for any social interaction to be possible "is this my world or the other's world that will temporary exist as our shared reality?". Politeness is a way to smooth out this process of frame adjustment, but verbal communication is only the surface level of how frame uncertainties are resolved, since most of the communication is non verbal.
Downstream of politeness, culture is the most important non-verbal social tool to smooth out frame uncertainties and frame conflicts. A culture is basically shared subconscious expectactions between a group of people. A shared culture among a group of people minimizes the differences in subconscious expectations among them.
What we call charisma is the ability to win peacefully frame conflicts. Someone charimastic is able to draw people into his world, into his expectations. Other people will confirm his predictive modeling when it conflicts with their.
Unfortunately many frame differences are settled without charisma, through violent and coercive means.
