LGBTQ+ young people face higher rates of suicide risk because of discrimination, minority stress, and hostile social and political environments. At the same time, supportive relationships and affirming environments play a major role in reducing this risk. This presentation will explore protective factors liked to better mental health outcomes among LGBTQ+ young people, including family and peer acceptance, affirming school climate, and identity affirmation, among others. Suicide prevention for LGBTQ+ youth people is not solely about crisis intervention; it is fundamentally about creating affirming spaces in which young people can be seen, supported, protected, and allowed to exist authentically.
Learning Objectives
- Identity protective factors associated with suicide among LGBTQ+ youth
- Explain how affirming relationships and community support can reduce suicide risk among LGBTQ+ young people
- Examine the impact of structural factors, including policies and social environments, on LGBTQ+ young people’s mental health
- Discuss research-based strategies for creating affirming and supportive environments for LGBTQ+ young people
