Eternal Life was the end goal... but in Genesis that was wrong?

Reflecting on the idea from some theologically liberal Christians that hell as punishment for sin is not "original Christianity" and instead the real idea is that Jesus opened for us the way to eternal life and conquered death for us. While I like that idea in theory, to me it always seemed odd considering that the story in Genesis of Adam and Eve being banished from the garden makes it sound like God didn't want them to have eternal life. Even if you take the story as allegory, it doesn't make sense. Adam and Eve ate from the tree of knowledge, giving them moral sense, but then they were banished lest they eat from the tree of life and live forever. Well, Jesus opened the way to eternal life, where people can... wait for it, live forever! I really don't get it.

We've all heard it so many times it's become cliche: God is Love! Well, what is love? It's an emotion, a consistent feeling, based on chemical reactions in the brain. God is specific chemical reactions inside our brain??

Christian response: Oh but God isn't "love" he is capital L "Love", he is Love itself! Making the L capital doesn't compute for me. What are you saying??
