Saturday crafty get together?? Weather permitting, of course.

I was thinking Saturday around 1pm-ish at Officers Square? Good spot to do crafts, grab a coffee or a snack, washrooms nearby. I'll bring my card weaving loom & my new tatting needles (hoping for a shuttle tatting lesson too 😉). Let me know if you'd like to join!

Would it be asking too much to add a little more light? AKA, light em up, boys!

Yes, this is another message about that horrible lower Smythe Street roundabout.

If the city needs to do a whip round (that's UK talk for a donation) for this... well, whip roundabout... in order to install pedestrian flashing lights at all four intersections, I can probably muster up a few dollars. Who decided to only put those yellow flashing lights at one cross walk? Personally, I like knowing ahead of time when a human body is going to be suddenly walking out in front of my car and not in 0.00001 seconds before it happens.

There is so much going on at that location, especially between 4:30pm & 5pm that having some extra precautions would be nice. The stopping, the unsurity of who is doing what, when, and especially where. The random "traffic light of utter confusion" up ahead that no one knows what that story is all about, cars turning left at random places. Just 3 more simple lights, flashing away, saying gently "hey buddy. Would you mind allowing this human to use their legs to get from this spot to that spot? There ya go my friend, my yellow lights will get you there safe and sound. Run along now!"

And before any of you judge the people who frequent the shelter, I find they actually use the crosswalk light at the only one provided before crossing. They're actually quite respectful with that, and if I wore hats, I would tip my hat to them.

A little cautionary tale for those of us at the top of Hanwell

I get that it's a beautiful long weekend, and I can't fault any motorcyclists for wanting to get out for a ride on such a nice day. But for those of us driving cars/trucks/SUVs, and drive the top of Hanwell by Bishop Drive, just be a bit extra cautious this weekend.

Twice today I have seen those speed racer type bikes driving up Hanwell towards Kingswood and using the left hand turning lanes between Bishop & Kitchen Fashions as passing lanes. We all know there's a speed limit change in that area, so these bikers must be doing nearly 90km/h or more to pass. I watched one biker pass 4 vehicles at once, so they must have been going very fast to make it in time. Since these aren't passing lanes, and there's a blind hill with a curve nearby, and we're having to reprogram our minds to be aware of bikers again, please be aware of your surroundings.

Stay safe everyone!

Anyone here into tatting? And should we form an outdoor craft group this summer?

Not tattooing, but the craft of tatting lacework. I stumbled upon a Shorts in YT over the weekend of a young man doing shuttle tatting. As a knitter, crocheter, weaver, macrame-er, cross stitcher, and recent woodworker, it peaked my interest. Do I have time to add yet another hobby to my ever growing list while working 44hrs/wk? Probably not. Is that going to stop me from learning? Absolutely not.

Problem is tatting isn't an overly popular craft, so I'm limited to buying supplies online. In doing some research, I found that needle tatting is a better starting point than shuttle tatting, but either way, I'm not able to find either item in local stores. I did place an order on Amazon for needles, and if I choose to also learn shuttle tatting, I'll buy a shuttle on Etsy.

Long story short (TL;DR): If anyone out there has any tatting supplies (needle or shuttle) they no longer use, please let me know.

Also, I'd love to show off my skills and find a group of textile crafters in town to get me out of the house this summer. I was thinking Officers Square to lounge with our various craft tools and revise the old tradition of creating in groups. Anyone interested for Saturday afternoons?

Could Fredericton benefit from tactical urbanism?

I just watched this great TikTok video from a guy in Chattanooga talking about non-permanent traffic alterations to make roads safer without construction or permits (in Chattanooga... not sure the bylaws in Fredericton). I live seeing how other places are coming up with creative ideas to make their neighbourhoods and cities safer.

Now, I know there is a propensity on this subreddit for extreme negativity, which may just be a Fredericton thing, but try to keep an open mind when watching.

For those who don't have TikTok, I was also able to find it in YouTube shorts.

I'm a little surprised more people don't drive mopeds/vespas in the city.

I'm thinking about getting one if the gas prices are going to continue to be ridiculous. From my understanding, if you have a class 5 license, you don't need a motorcycle license to drive a moped with 50cc engine.

I think I'd feel safer on a moped than an electric bicycle. No offense, but Fredericton drivers aren't exactly attentive to cyclists, and the road to my home has no sidewalk or shoulder for quite a ways, and that alone makes me super nervous to be on a bicycle. And I don't have the money for a motorcycle. My job requires me to have some kind of vehicle, so using public transportation is out of the question.

I'm just surprised more people don't use mopeds in the summer. I can't even really find a dealership that has them other than Honda, and they just list one type with one colour option on their website. Jim Gilbert's used to have a whole bunch, but I don't see any on their website anymore.
