AITA for turning off the roommates AC/Fan when she’s not home?

We live in NYC and the hotter months are starting. I too, am partial to cold air, but whenever my roommate leaves for the entire day she always leaves her AC and fan on. I shut it off before I leave and usually return before she does. We split the electric bill evenly because there’s no way to see where the majority of the charges come from and who is racking up more. She went away for 2 weeks and left her fan on. She told me not to shut it off, and our bill doubled.

I feel bad if she thinks I’m invading her space. I never go into her room and look around, and I only turn off the fan and AC. I tried to explain to her that I would otherwise split the bill according to who is charging more, but there’s no way to see that so we should try to keep costs down. I also never nag her about it, I just shut it off if I notice it’s on and she’s not home.

She has gotten upset with me saying she needs the fan on so she can be greeted by a cool room, and I tried to explain that a fan only cools you because humans have moisture, and it doesn’t cool the room itself. She got super upset and stormed out, leaving the fan on. I also am home most of the day and have my Fan or AC on, which cools the entire apartment, and shut it off when I leave.

I hate the heat, and I’m able to make this work especially during energy surcharge months. I have no problem with her using whatever when she’s home, but it’s pointless if no one is in her room. AITA?
