Im so dissapointed
Long rant, sorry, but this series is really close to my heart because I used to be obsessed with BBM when I was a toddler and preteen, and I remember really liking the idea that Beyblades were kind of just a force of nature that existed in the world alongside other natural forces. They had chosen Bladers and everything.
But rewatching it, I really hate how this show does not just lean into its supernatural elements. The show is boring as fuck if the vestiges are just visual flair and we are really just watching two random pieces of metal with no meaning clashing. Like, what does Madoka mean during the Gingka versus Julian battle when she says, "Oh, there has to be a real reason. It cannot be a curse." What the fuck? Why is this show so selective about what is real and what is not? All the cool parts are explained away with boring bullshit that destroys the uniqueness of the show. Her side literally says Beyblades came out of a star fragment, and we have been watching tiny spinning metal tops obey their wielders' speech as if they understand what is going on and destroy entire stadiums. But suddenly a curse is too unrealistic and has to be explained away with some badly written, made up "realistic" garbage.
It is so frustrating because Beyblade Metal is mostly remembered for how over the top it is supposed to be, and that is what makes it cool and different. But in reality, the show really tries to convince you that these are nothing more than spinning metal tops. It is just so bad at it that it is remembered as over the top, even when it is specifically trying not to be. It just ends up looking ridiculous because there has to be some supernatural element to it. But no, let us just write out the actual cool parts, like there actually being an ancient mythical curse contained within a Beyblade, by saying, "Uh, electromagnetic waves, bro," destroying any uniqueness Gravity Destroyer had because, by that logic, literally anyone could have Gravity Destroyer. There could be thousands of Gravity Destroyers, but there are not because... why? Sirius could have just taken Julian's or Damian's Bey, reverse engineered it, mass produced it, and taken over the world easily because, in this universe, that is just how spinning works. What is enhancing, anyway? I guess Ziggurat was just giving these children repeated heart attacks or something for no reason.
That is why I think the Dark Power is not actually anything supernatural. It is just schizophrenia or PTSD, and Tsubasa just got lucky every time he supposedly "went crazy" and got stronger. Why? Because that is what the show wants you to think. You cannot have a supernatural ancient dark force that tries to corrupt the Bladers it infects and makes them stronger while feeding off their misery, while at the same time having characters be shocked that there might be an ancient curse within one of the most prestigious Beyblades on the planet.
This show really tries to have its cake and eat it too, and it ends up hurting itself because it just ends up looking ridiculous. Honestly, it kind of ruins the story altogether.
I know it is not that serious, but rewatching the show now that I am (a bit) older, this really bugs the hell out of me. Maybe the realism thing will grow on me as i get older and have a fully developed frontal cortex at twenty five, but that is going to be a while.
