Lab Experience vs Independent Research

In your experience / opinion (particularly pertaining to PhD admissions), is lab experience valued more than independent research (or vice versa)? The question is specifically asked regarding U.S. programs and social sciences, but please feel free to share your perspective from other regions / fields. I've been wondering if research experience is considered relevant regardless, or if programs expect specific lab experience (and if they do, why do so many programs, at least in my field, begin with classes on basic research methods / statistics, when they're only admitting students who should already have those skills and beyond?). TIA!

awaiting on an official response, but wondering if anyone's been through this... if you're from one of the countries who can travel visa free / with e-visa if you hold a valid visa/residence permit from EU/OECD countries to Georgia, does that work with a visit visa as well? e.g. if you hold a visit visa for the U.S., does that fulfill the requirement? if anyone has been through this, please hmu or comment! i'm traveling with my partner (hopefully) and unfortunately carry the weaker passport :/
