If you were moving to Tbilisi for 1+ years, would you choose Vake, Saburtalo or Vera?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to move to Tbilisi next year and will be working remotely, so I’m trying to decide which area would be the best fit for long-term living. After doing quite a bit of research, I’ve narrowed it down to Vake, Saburtalo and Vera.

My priorities are:

- safety
- reliable internet and a good environment for remote work
- walkability
- cafés, restaurants and everyday services nearby
- easy access to the rest of the city
- a neighbourhood that feels good to actually live in, not just visit as a tourist
- a quiet and comfortable environment (I also have an indoor cat).

From my research so far, my impression is:
- Vake: best quality of life and most residential/upscale
- Saburtalo: most practical and convenient for everyday life
- Vera: best balance between local life and experiencing Tbilisi.

I’d really appreciate some local and expat opinions:

  1. Which of these three areas would you personally choose for a 1+ year stay, and why?
  2. Is Vake worth the higher prices?
  3. Does Saburtalo eventually feel too generic, or is that an unfair stereotype?
  4. Is Vera still a good place to live long-term, or is it better for shorter stays?
  5. Which area has the best café/restaurant scene for day-to-day life?
  6. Which feels safest and most comfortable to walk around in the evenings?
  7. Are there any specific streets or sub-areas within Vake, Saburtalo or Vera that you would particularly recommend (or avoid)?
  8. For someone working from home, would you prioritise a larger apartment in Vake/Saburtalo or a smaller but more central apartment in Vera?
  9. If you had an indoor cat and worked from home, would that influence your choice between these areas?
  10. Finally, if you know any reliable and trustworthy real estate agents experienced with expats and long-term rentals, I’d be very grateful for recommendations.

Thanks very much!

So... There are no Zero Sugar drinks in Tbilisi?

In pretty much every single market I visit in the streets of Rustaveli and Vake, the only zero-sugar drink available (aside from, obviously, water) is Coca-Cola, and occasionally some zero-sugar energy drinks (if you get lucky).

There is no Fanta, no Sprite, no 7-Up, nor any other notable brand's sugar-free option. There is Aquafina, which tastes sort of like Sprite, but even that is rarely encountered.

Seeing how in many parts of the world, zero-sugar drinks are basically becoming the default choice on the market, it's quite shocking to see such a severe lack of them in Tbilisi.

So, why do you think this is the case? And is my observation even true? I mean, maybe I am (somehow) looking in the wrong places?

Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

Curious About Naturism in Tbilisi.. Looking for Advice

Hi everyone! I've been interested in naturism/nudism for a while and was wondering if there are any fellow nudists or naturists in Tbilisi who'd be willing to share their experiences.

I'm mainly interested in learning about the local naturist community, whether there are any clothing-optional beaches, private clubs, or legal places where naturism is practiced, and how accepted it is in Georgia. I'm looking for respectful, genuine conversations and would appreciate any advice or recommendations.

Feel free to comment below or send me a DM. Thanks!

Get driver's license

Hi guys! I'm Georgian and I want to learn how to drive and get my driver's license (for a regular passenger car). I already have a solid theoretical understanding and a little bit of practical experience. I'm planning to study the theory on my own, get a bit of practice, and then take the test. I want to go for a manual transmission.

If anyone here has gone through this, please share all the nuances and challenges of the process. Also, feel free to throw some tips my way on where and how it's best to do everything. Thanks in advance!

Last Meal

It’s your last day on earth, you happen to be in Tbilisi. Where are you having your last meal? What are you ordering?

I know the answer is most likely at home eating grandma’s food. However, I’m a tourist hoping for recommendations, so unless you’re willing to invite me to your grandma’s dinner (which I’ll very gladly accept!), Im looking for restaurants/dishes.

Cheers!

Wanna get some Georgian friends

Sup guys, I came to Tbilisi for work. I'm 22, and here I only know my old colleagues. I really want to make some Georgian friends. Can you help me find places (bars or clubs) where young guys like me hang out? 'Cause I've only found 30+ spots during my search

Car rental recommendations in Tbilisi

Hi everyone!

My wife and I are planning a 7-day trip to Georgia. We'd like to rent a car in Tbilisi and drive to Batumi, with a few stops along the way.

Can anyone recommend a reliable car rental company with fair prices and no hidden fees? We'd also appreciate any tips on insurance or things to watch out for.

Thank you 🙏

Weird question but can you use your laptop for long periods at a McDonald’s?

So I normally work at Dunkin with my laptop for hours at a time. But recently I’ve been thinking of trying McDonald’s but I’ve never really seen anyone ‘work’ at a McDonald’s.

I know it’s weird but is it appropriate to work at a McDonald’s or is it just weird here?

How do you spend time here in Tbilisi apart from bar crawls and drinking?

I’ve been living in Tbilisi for more than 4 years and unless you’re going outside to see the nature, it seems there’s nothing to do here. How do you search for activities? I tried apps, I tried google search, nothing. Can you recommend something? I’m into music writing, jamming, board games(not too geeky though), possibly hiking, computer games, stand up comedy.

Who wants a grey and white kitten?

These are Lotta (bottom, open mouth, last pic), Zorro (middle) and Rozalina (top, 2nd pic). They are 6 weeks old and looking for homes.

Lotta (female) is very playful and affectionate. Rozalina (female) is sweet and cuddly. Zorro (male) is playful and the most intelligent kitten of the litter.

All 3 kittens have been bathed, de-flead and dewormed. They are eating on their own, litter trained and healthy.

If you are interested in adopting Zorro, Lotta or Rozalina, leave a comment or send me a DM. You can also reach out to me via Whatsapp- +48669413200 .

Cat foster needed 😔

We found Gustupher on the street with an eye infection and brought him to the vet. It turns out, he also has a virus.

Because of this, Gustupher needs a new place to stay. He was staying with a foster who has a cat, and we can’t risk him staying there, as the virus is quite possibly contagious.

He urgently needs a foster to stay with until his virus is cured.

The medication, food and litter is paid for. All he needs is someone willing to take him in (who doesn’t have cats).

If you know of anyone, please let me know! I’d be very grateful to any reply.

He’s a good boy, calm and cuddly, and he deserves a better life.
