Let’s talk about the Shadow Riders for a second

This arc was honestly frustrating to watch because, looking back, it had so much potential. It started off really strong with Nightshroud/Darkness, followed by Camula — easily my personal favorite Shadow Rider and the first villain in the show who genuinely felt threatening. She got two wins and even came close to beating Jaden, which made the stakes feel real for once.

Then everything started to fall apart. The dark, creepy atmosphere that made the beginning so engaging slowly disappeared. Tanya wasn’t bad at all — she even managed to win a key — but between her introduction, all the unnecessary filler in the middle, and the two completely useless comedy Shadow Riders afterward, the arc lost a lot of momentum.

Titan came after and he was fine and it did pick back up with Banner, who was a genuinely strong and interesting reveal, but then Kagemaru happened. He barely did anything throughout the entire show, and then suddenly appeared at the end as the final villain. He completely undermined the importance of the keys and just had a duel for the sake of having a final villain duel. Honestly, he ended up being one of the weakest villains in the franchise and somehow made the already thin plot feel even messier.

The arc desperately needed more going on in its plot. Kagemaru needed far more involvement throughout the story so he wouldn’t feel so unnecessary as a final villain, and the conflict between the Key Keepers and the Shadow Riders should’ve had much more back-and-forth. Instead, most of the Shadow Riders barely accomplished anything before getting taken out.

That ties into one of the biggest problems with GX as a whole: Jaden had to win everything, beat everyone, and always be the one to save the day. It made the arc feel predictable and hurt the tension because most characters never got the chance to contribute in meaningful ways.
