r/yugioh

Yusei is probably the character that has the biggest gap in terms of the quality in the support cards he receives. The cards are either the most unplayable trash ever or complete custom god tier.
I read cards like anchorbolt hedgehog and I still can't believe garbage this bad was printed in the modern age of yugioh. All it does is summon itself from the grave and it has the nerve to lock you into synchros. On the other hand junk meister is complete bonkers. Free special summon and is a rota for anything in it's own archetype.
I honestly can't tell if konami loves or hates yusei. They can give him cards like anchorbolt hedgehog, crossroad chick and one-way synchro but will then turn around and give him junk meister, junk armor and synchro emergency. It's so weird how big a gap in the card quality of the support he gets. The cards are either complete trash or the most broken cards ever. Feels like there really is no in between.
I like that Jonouchi develops affection for Yugi's grandfather to the point of seeing him as a father figure.
Clarification: I didn't watch the English dub and I watched the series in Japanese, so I don't know if the English adaptation omitted that level of respect he develops for Yugi's grandfather.
Getting back to the main topic:
Jonouchi comes from a dysfunctional background where it's implied that he suffered physical and psychological abuse at the hands of his father. The manga delves even deeper into this by revealing that his father figure has a gambling addiction, which further underscores the instability of his legal guardian.
This leads him to develop a violent and belligerent attitude as a way to escape his situation.
Let's see that, at his young age, he has to deal with a lack of motivation in life due to his father's addictions, attend a school where he feels he's not doing anything useful, and suffer the progressive decline of his sister's health, without even being able to keep her company because of his mother's whims, implying that Jonouchi's mother is no better than his father.
The series begins by showing that he's friends with Yugi from the start, without adapting the story arcs prior to Kaiba's duel against Yugi in Duel Monsters, compensating for the missing information through flashbacks.
After a while, although the series doesn't explicitly state it, it becomes clear that he sees some of his sister's best qualities in Yugi, creating a parallel between the past and present of their relationship: he dropped the Millennium Puzzle at the beginning of his relationship with Yugi, and later, as atonement, he tried to retrieve the pieces of Exodia.
As their relationship improves, Jonouchi, spending time with Yugi, meets his grandfather, initially being somewhat rude. However, his attitude changes when he learns about the Yu-Gi-Oh! tournaments that could provide the money for his sister's surgery.
Swallowing his pride (remember that he was quite rude to Yugi's grandfather at first for no apparent reason), he asks his friend's grandfather for help improving his dueling skills, and from that moment on, it becomes clear that he develops an almost paternal respect for him.
This makes sense considering that, before Yugi's grandfather, all the adults in his life had disappointed him at best and hurt him at worst. Yugi's grandfather is the only respectful adult figure he had encountered up to that point.
This serves as a narrative element that increases Jonouchi's pressure to win, as his sister's health and the life of the closest thing to a father he has ever known are at stake.
As I often joke with a friend: Jonouchi almost seems like the protagonist of Duelist Kingdom, given his level of evolution from the beginning to the end of the arc.
I always felt like “Chaos” should have been an its own Attribute (maybe even they are treated as a Dual-Attribute?)
And it should be more than LIGHT/DARK related. I want to see more Water/Fire.. Earth/Wind combos too! (Perhaps Thunder&Plant as a reference to early video games that had Wood and Thunder as Attributes.. maybe even Illusion&Spellcaster too)
What are some changes from the manga and the dub that shocked you after learning about them, and what are some that had you say "ah that makes sense?"
The original Yu-Gi-Oh is one of the most heavily changed anime adaptations of a popular manga, and has one of the most heavily edited English dubs. As a result there were a lot of moments that I learned were changed that gave me reaction that ranged from shocking, to making sense, and in some cases, a little of both.
The most obvious shocking change is how the dub covered up death with the Shadow Realm. Though at the same time it is also a case of changes that cause things to make so much sense because it explains where all of Marik's goons are getting magical items.
The two biggest details for me that caused things to make so much sense when I learned about them were Kaiba's denial of magic, and Marik's goals. If you are only familiar with the dub, Kaiba's denial of the existence of magic is a dub only trait. This explains why he does accept magic's existence in Duelist Kingdom and not the rest of the anime, the localization changed this aspect of him for the sake of jokes.
Marik suddenly turning good made no sense to me when I first watched the anime, then I learned trying to take over the world was a dub only trait and in the Japanese version he just wanted to free himself from his duty as a tomb keeper. I have no idea why the localization changed this but aside from the ending of GX's third season implying Jaden is dead in the dub I consider in the worst localization change.
Something that got a really big shock from me in the original was learning that during Yugi and Joey's match in Duelist Kingdom, Pegasus' entire monologue over his flashback was dub only. I am honestly surprised that moment isn't talked about more when it comes to best dub changes. It is a really powerful moment that helps detail how jaded a man Pegasus is.
My biggest shock learning about the original manga was how violent it was, and how many events were changed because of the pre-Duel Monsters stories being cut. Even beyond that there are moments of violence the anime cut out such as the Yami Bakura killing Bonz and his crew, murdering them the old-fashioned way was turned into killing them with magic in the anime. And of course, there is Pegasus' death in the manga. That was a surprise to learn about, yet it also made sense knowing he died since apart from the Doma Season, he didn't appear again outside of flashbacks.
Outside of that, my biggest shock in the manga was seeing how much of a badass Joey is compared to the anime. He gets out of a lot more situations without needing help, on top of being superhuman. In the anime he gets beat up by Bandit Keith, in the manga it was the other way around, on top of the hilariously insane moment where Joey ran off to fight Kaiba's mercs in Death T. It looked like he was nuts, but he actually KOed one of them.
The detail about the manga that got the biggest "ah, that makes sense" reaction from when I learned about it was that Kaiba wasn't around for the Millennium World arc. If you're only familiar with the anime, that's why he barely does anything that season; in the manga, he wasn't there.
These are my reactions. What shocked you the most when you learned it was changed from the manga or the original anime?

Hell of a wholesome story happen to me today
Long story short, I used to have a childhood friend who really loved YGO, and we usually exchanged cards as kids. I stayed in contact with him until 2nd grade in elementary school, then we went radio silent after that, like we completely nearly forgot about each other.
So, I went to a Vietnamese local today in my city with my YGO group. We had a great time dueling each other, and then I got matched up with a guy who is the same age as me. We dueled for 4 matches; he played a Spellcaster deck and I played an Angelechy Junk deck (the results were 3 wins and 1 loss for me because my hand bricked and got disrupted). After that, we went to discuss things with other duelists at another table. One of them asked where his house was, and when he gave directions, I realized it was the same place where my childhood friend used to live. We then recognized each other after a few questions, bonding again after 11 years of forgetting each other, and exchanged contacts for future duels at locals. The crazy thing is, before we realized who we were, we spent like 3 hours in the locals without noticing each other, even while dueling
I can't believe the game I loved as a kid helped me find a lost friend who shares the same hobby.
At what point did atem lose his memories
I was reading the manga and the shift from evil atem to a more chill one was just so sudden he went from torturing people to well not. Was it because of the death-T games how it the penalty game didn't work for kaiba the first time? Also he just loses his memories as well? So he doesn't remember anything he did in "season 0"
Ocg manga (magical war)
After reading the magical war and the laat card wich got printed i guess regulus will maybe become a sub engine within the magistus arch type wich will connect endymion, witchcrafter and spellbook.
What do you think ?
How would you create a "Horror" Themed meme deck?
Hi there,
I would like to create a deck with just 1 goal, combining the scariest or most sinister Artworks Yugioh has accumulated over the past 25+ years while technically remaining functional. (Doesn't need to be particularly good).
Whether it's dark fantasy, cosmic horror, scares from the deep sea, vengeful gods&yokai, murder and other crime in the modern day, fairy tales and whatever else you might consider scary/grim/sinister.
Thanks in advance for your input. :)
I call this the "Stealing Deck"
Made this back when I was a kid as a "fun" challenge deck using anime/manga cards.
I think you can see a theme 😂
Do you think blind second decks can be healthy for the game? Does their play style feel like it produces good gameplay?
Historically blind second decks seem like they're either unplayable in the meta or are too strong to the point of being unfun and hated. There are blind second decks that see petdeck play, like Cyber Dragon or Ancient Gears. But they're lucky to get a single match win at locals. Then there's Tenpai which is so consistent and uninteractive that it feels like you're getting blown out.
Maybe there's Sky Striker somewhere in the middle. But that deck has seen so many iterations with different game plans. Maybe that's considered a healthy blind second deck, but they even prefer to go first now, and it's still seen as a hated deck by some.
We all know that going second needs to be stronger in yugioh, but going second specific decks have a rough history. Should blind second decks exist? Or recently we've seen cards include bonus effects going second to bridge that advantage gap, is that better?
Let me know what you think.
You know, there's very few cards who show their aging as *bad* as the anime version of Exodia Necross.😑
First of all, it only has protection from destruction. Nowadays, cards can be banished, tributed for things like Kaijus, be equipped to the opponent's monsters, hell, there's even some cards who just "send" cards to the GY, so it's technically not destruction.
Also, use three of out the five pieces just for protection from Monster, Spell, and Trap effects? If this had been any more recent, just one of the pieces would have that effect, and it would just be a blanket "cannot be destroyed by card effects".
This card would not last a single turn nowadays. The singular piece that's protecting Exodia Necross in the given circumstance would be sniped out of the GY with D.D. Crow.
Have you guys had some interesting trade stories?
About a couple weeks ago some dude who I noticed was eyeing my binder and kept making comments about “that’s a nice card”. He clearly knew certain values about cards like ultimate Cyber Dragons, secret Dark Grephers, etc. He asked for trades and we both switched binders. From my POV he tried to do some dodgy thing where he was moving my binder not too far way but was kind of hidden from my view due to other players doing their thing. I told a buddy of mine to keep watch on him. After maybe 30 seconds I pretty much asked for the binder back because maybe he wasn’t trying to steal anything but I didn’t see any point in trading when I saw these Sphinx cards on the front page and almost nothing else. He still is around so maybe I was just being paranoid.
Pure light and darkness ritual
Just trying to get a decent build to start with. Got locals tomorrow, just wanted some advice on my build. I have a third black chaos ordered, I only got one pot of sloth or I'd run more. Extra deck is far from optimized. Working on getting magician of destruction and gaze of timaeus so I can run dragoon.
I know there's the option to run rda and fallen of the white dragon engines, but I don't have either of those at present, but I'm also not sure how much I actually like those in the first place.
I have been toying around with splashing angelechy into the deck, since the monster lineup is pretty slim, and the extra deck is pretty open ended too. But I wanted to nail this down first so I know what works and what doesn't.
What is your favorite special summoning type in Yu-Gi-Oh! and why?
Hey guys, it’s me again, back for the weekly post and happy Fourth of July for all my Americans out there. Just like usual the title is the question what is your favorite special summoning type in Yu-Gi-Oh!? you have ritual fusion synchro, XYZ, pendulum and Link. I know you could also technically call them extra deck types but then some people would be like oh rituals don’t count then and I don’t wanna say monster types because then people would argue if that was light or dark or whatever so I settled on special summoning type. Apologies for the confusion.
For me personally, it is XYZ. I know it is responsible for having the second highest amount of monster type bannings, but I enjoy the material system that it provides. Also, a lot of of my favorite decks are XYZ decks mostly by happenstance. Goblin bikers. Melffy suship, Mimighoul etc. so what about you guys?
Ps I’d like to thank you guys on the checking in messages. Some of you have been sending me. They’re very nice and I’m glad a lot of you like the discussion posts I do on the sub. With my new job and also some of the less than nice messages I think I’m going to only do one post a week instead of the 2 to 3 post I used to do just because of how much attention my New position demands and a few other things I don’t wanna talk about. But I think of those that enjoy these posts and enjoy the discussions you guys are the best
