PSA - For those of you cooking up lists with Pumpking. Save yourself the headache by not running 3 CotH nor a single Mammoth.
The deck has a lot of ways to access its 1 card starter, but a big issue people don't talk about a lot is that the deck has a lot cards it doesn't want to open. So if we're calculating the chances of drawing your "bricks" or "semi-bricks". Assuming we have a 40 card deck we have the mandatory:
- Call of the Haunted - 2
- Changshi - 1
- Eldlich the Golden Lord - 1
That makes 4 cards and so we have a 42 percent chance of opening at least 1 of them. Here's the calculator: https://cardgamecalculator.com/?N=40&K=4&n=5&k=1
That's kinda rough already, although these aren't true bricks and you can play around them such as using Droplet or Eldlich to cycle them, it's still not ideal.
Now if you add an additional 1 Call of the Haunted, 1 Mammoth, and 1 DoomKing, that raises the chance to a whopping 64 percent chance of opening a really sub-optimal hand: https://cardgamecalculator.com/?N=40&K=7&n=5&k=1
That's way too high for opening a sub-optimal hand in a rogue/casual tier deck. If you truly believe that's the best way to build the deck, I suggest you get used to surrendering and ask yourself if you have a gambling problem. But if you really don't care, go for it and waste your gems harder.
EDIT: Yes, I consider Eldlich mandatory for this version of the list. Mainly because we don't have all the zombie support yet and Eldlich helps cycle out a lot of the spells/traps on your hand and field. Also I'm not considering Army of the Haunted a semi-brick, because can at least still be used as an extender if your Pumpking gets ashed/impermed.
I never thought I'd see myself enjoying Branded
It all started with me just splashing the White Albaz + Fallen and Virtuous engine into every deck. Now I'm finding myself wanting more complex combo lines and bridges and slowly transitioning all my decks from small engine to large engines, to the point of the decks just becoming Branded.
I dropped a couple of hundred of dollars to buy the physical cards now 😂
Also, I'm genuinely convinced that one of the best way to learn the deck is to start with learning the deck as a smaller engine first if that's an option.
Ptolemaeus Turn Skip can be done in with 3 materials
Definitely not ideal as it requires you to run two Diamonds and go into it in Main Phase 2. Just sort of funny though.
Over past few weeks, I played in a round robin league at a local pickleball spot - and I couldn't help but notice that whenever we "warmed up", everyone just wanted to drive the ball back and forth. I've been playing about a year now, and by no means am I good - but it was driving me crazy (pun not intentional).
After the games wrapped up, one of the guys was venting to me about how he wanted to get better. He'd been watching all these videos on youtube, and yet he doesn't seem to get getting any better. I went and said "Hey, let's drill some dinks" and I'm not kidding, his response was "Oh, at my level, I don't think people really do that".
Brother, you're not going to improve if you don't want to learn. Dinking is an essential skill. You don't HAVE to dink every game, but you'll need to learn how to do it when the situation calls for it.
Anyways, end rant. Thanks for listening.
