Possible nerve damage/pain post enucleation?

My sweet girl had her eye and part of her cheekbone removed to treat a soft tissue sarcoma in mid March. Recovery went fine but she's been scratching at the socket and her nose bad enough to cause bleeding.

She's already on gabapentin 2x a day for feline hypersthesia so we started giving her a 3rd dose to see if it helped with the face scratching. It has definitely calmed a bit since we started the extra dose so I'm leaning towards potential nerve damage from the surgery. Apparently that isn't uncommon following removal of the optic nerve.

I know I should consult with her ophthalmologist but my Care Credit is nearly maxed out from the surgery, biopsies, and all the diagnostics. I'd like to avoid using it in case some other emergency with one of my cats comes up before I can get that paid off.

Anyone else experience this? Did a soft donut cone help at all? I'll put her back in an e-collar if I have to but I'd rather avoid that since she already spent 4 miserable months living in one.
