Evan Wright is the Perfect Audience Surrogate

So I thought I'd watch Das Boot again, since it had been many years - and what suprised me is the way it's told on the submarine using a Reporter/War Corrispondant - and everything is explained to him, the inner workings of the things all these men are expert in and would never explain otherwise.

And of course it made me compare that to Generation Kill - except Evan wasn't made up for the convenience of an audience surrogate... he's fortuitously just there, writing and framing the story as a newbie. It's so perfect a surrogate that Das Boot (and other stories) invent such a person just to try to bring the audience up to speed....

Reflections On Venue Size (after the Toronto show)

Toronto show last night, and it’s been many (many!) years since they were in our city. The last few times I saw them were in music halls and small concert venues.

It was a beautiful night, and the acoustics were surprisingly great for such a large venue (around 10,000 people between seats and floor). That said, it’s definitely harder to feel part of the communal experience when you’re sitting way back!

Nice to see so many die-hard fans though — lots of people who seemed to know every word. Also a really good mix of male and female fans, which honestly surprised me a bit.

Have you seen Cake in larger venues, smaller venues, or both? How did it affect your experience?
