5K issues on Windows

Is Windows a suboptimal experience on high resolution displays?

I recently purchased a 5k monitor, 27 inch with a 218 ppi. I'm coming from a 1440p 27 inch, which works nicely, although I'd like better text sharpness. You'd think it should work flawlessly on 200% scaling in Windows, everything being the same size as before, just much sharper text.

And that's true, for the most part... But I find there are several minor quirks in Windows. Like some websites making the fonts extremely thin on the 5K, so it's difficult to read. The .txt file icon lost its lines. The list goes on. None are dealbreakers by themselves, but accumulated they make the experience feel unpolished. Even so much so that using a 1440p 27 inch display scaled at 100% feels almost as nice.

I also have a Macbook Air 15 inch, with similarly high PPI of ~220. Here I get none of these same issues. It seems this OS is better suited for high resolutions.

Do you have the same experience?

ASUS ROG Strix XG27JCG Initial impressions

Just got the monitor set up. Worked well on a 100x100 VESA mount. Only after playing around with it for a few minutes, here are my initial impressions:

- Overall a nice panel. Good IPS quality
- Very sharp text. Have used 27 inch 4K panel previously. The text is razor sharp here, although also good on 4K
- SDR brightness is pretty decent, but I wish it was even brighter. I think it will be good enough for an office day in a sunlit room, but remains to be seen.
- Good motion handling
- 1440p mode is maybe 85% -90% as sharp as a native 1440p panel. It’s good for gaming. When you need sharpness, just use the 5k mode.
- Build quality is pretty good, but weird to use the heavy gamer aesthetic, as this monitor is excellent for productivity, and ok/ good for gaming.

Overall I like it out of the box and think this is something I might keep. I think it’s a good choice for someone like me who does mostly productivity, and also want the same panel to be good for SDR gaming.
