To preface, I’m using the term Bicoque loosely because it seems to be a modern categorizing or retronym contextualizing of these early close helms (or armets, same case).
Is there any precedents for German visor styles that are closer to that of Italianesque? I am designing a late Kastenbrust harness, but at a crossroads on the helmet visor.
I’ve been taking a look at the Albrechtsaltar (dated c. 1437) and Mair’s armoured combat manual for some inspiration of plating; for the helmet though I’ve noticed that this style started to shift towards more “bulbous” rounded corners over sharply edged as a natural transition from early boxy to late gothic, with the visors tending to follow this design philosophy. (See painting of Konrad Witz’s armor).
The closest I’m finding so far is that of Jean sans Peur’s effigy (Jean 1st of Burgundy) though some may say it’s closer to a grand bascinet with side pivots (akin to a close helm)?
Maybe this is simply “fantasy” or closer to that of a sparrow beak armet. If anyone’s got some ideas or recommendations let me know! Thanks!
