Post Power outage issues
Afternoon, I'm trying to troubleshoot one of my friends PCs and i'm a little unsure of what could be the issue and looking to bounce off some ideas.
The other day their house experienced a power outage. Before the power completely cut, the power gave out then came back in rapid succession 3 times, when power fully came back, the PC would only start in a windows recovery environment where it would fail under ANY selected option.
They DO NOT have a surge protector. Only a basic power bar which the computer is plugged into.
I did not play around with the command prompt option.
At the time of initial evaluation i thought that maybe the Motherboard or their HDD boot drive got taken out during the power issues.
What i've gone over:
- Regular boot up and attempt options in Windows recovery. Would end in a reboot to the same window.
- no system restore to go back to.
- unplugged the HDD with the OS and installed a blank working SATA SSD with the intention of installing copy of Windows on it.
- Before plugging in my boot drive, i confirmed if i could get it to post to BIOS. It could when the HDMI/Displayport were plugged into the GPU.
- When plugged directly into the motherboard, an image would not be displayed.
- Potential problem here, i didn't unplug the GPU prior to testing this, so that could be a reason why no image displayed.
- When plugging in my boot drive, i swapped the BIOS to boot from it for the fresh install onto the new Sata SSD, an image displayed but it was broken.
- The image would show an initial black window, presumably what i think would be the expected mobo logo but was deformed into the bottom of the screen, then progressed to a blue windows which i assume was supposed to be the windows install, but it was simply a blue screen with a black bar on the side. Safe to say that isn't correct.
- The image only ever appeared when plugged into the GPU directly. Into Mobo would produce a black screen.
What should my next steps be?
I'm assuming probably confirm whether the image stays off or comes back and is messed up with the GPU unplugged. If the image is still blank, that basically says the issue is that the Mobo is cooked?
Any other tests i should perform to nail down what may be the issue and needs replacing?
